Cristian Bernardini and Jimmy Keenan drive in three runs apiece against the Sharks
Freshman Cristian Bernardini led the charge with a 4-for-5 showing to go with three RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Jimmy Keenan matched Bernardini in the RBI column while going 3-for-5 with a pair of tallies. The White Plains, N.Y., native also bumped his multi-game hitting streak to five.
Outfielders Ben Beauchamp and Jackson Tucker each logged twos across the board, with a pair of hits, runs and RBIs in Tuesday's victory. First baseman Aidan Cohall made his first collegiate start and did not disappoint, going 2-for-5 at the dish with two RBIs and a tally.
After LIU (3-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, St. John's retaliated with a two-spot in the home half. Tucker laced a single to left and proceeded to swipe second. Beauchamp took a 1-1 offering the same way to knock in the first run of the game. Two batters later, Keenan roped an RBI single up the middle, bringing Beauchamp around for a 2-1 lead.
The Johnnies struck again in the bottom of the second on a Beauchamp RBI single to left, knocking Jace Jeremiah in from second and taking a 3-1 lead.
Both teams were held off the board until the fourth frame when Sharks' Jake Mastillo hit a solo shot to right, slashing the deficit to one, 3-2.
The Red Storm unloaded a nine-spot in a frame for the second time in a week, posting nine against Iona on March 5. The Johnnies tallied eight hits in the bottom of the fifth, three of which were run-producing doubles.
Aidan Cohall recorded his first collegiate RBI with on a double to left-center to go up two, 4-2. After Bernardini made it a 5-2 affair with a one-run single, the Johnnies loaded the bases. Tucker smacked a two-run double underneath the first baseman's glove and down the line to go up by five. Beauchamp was plunked on the ensuing pitch, setting up Mayberry for an RBI single up the middle to take an 8-2 lead. Keenan unloaded on the first pitch he saw in the following at-bat, sending a double to left-center and scoring both Beauchamp and Tucker for a 10-2 advantage. After batting around, Bernardini cashed in again, this time with a two-run infield single that saw Keenan never breaking stride rounding third and scoring the 12th tally of the game.
Reliever Louis Marinaro put forth his best outing of the season, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of work and striking out four batters. The Croton on Hudson, N.Y., native gave up a double in the top of the seventh, but quickly halted the threat by inducing a groundout to first and ending the frame.
Cohall knocked in the final run of the game on an RBI groundout to short, scoring Mayberry from third and giving the Red Storm a 13-2 lead.
TJ Winn Jr. came on in the eighth and stifled the LIU lineup with a 1-2-3 frame. The freshman out of Manchester, Conn., found himself in trouble in the final stanza after surrendering a double and a single with one out. The righty quickly turned the tide with runners on the corners and forced a pair of flyouts on the first pitch of each at-bat to secure the 11-run victory.
The Red Storm will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium tomorrow for a 3 p.m. showdown against Stony Brook. Wednesday's game will be an audio-only broadcast on RedStormSports.com.
