St. John’s to Square Off with LIU and Stony Brook in Midweek Matchups

The Red Storm rides a five-game winning streak into Tuesday’s contest with the
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 11, 2024) – Fresh off a weekend sweep of Hofstra, St. John's will look to extend its five-game winning streak with back-to-back midweek matchups against LIU and Stony Brook. The Red Storm (8-4) and the Sharks (3-9) will square off on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. tilt. Wednesday's showdown between the Johnnies and the Seawolves (7-7) is also slated for 3 p.m.
FloSports will broadcast Tuesday's contest between the Red Storm and the Sharks, with St. John's fans being provided a discounted link for its services. Wednesday's game will be an audio-only broadcast. Live stats will be provided for both contests on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's swept Hofstra in three games over the weekend. After taking Friday's doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 10-1, the Red Storm edged out the Pride, 9-8, on Sunday. Outfielder Ben Beauchamp (.600) and catcher Jimmy Keenan (.500) paced the weekend hitting over .500 with six hits apiece. Beauchamp led the squad with six runs scored in three games, while the trio of Adam Agresti, Anthony Brienza and Blake Mayberry rattled off four RBIs apiece.
Since jumpstarting its recent winning streak against Houston on March 3, the Red Storm is slashing .308/.402/.450 as a team and averaging 8.4 runs per contest. The St. John's pitching staff has been equally as solid with a 2.93 team ERA and a .240 batting average against. Veteran relievers Ben Adams and Tim Cunningham led the way in appearances with three apiece, combining to strike out seven batters across eight innings of work.
St. John's is 1-1 against LIU since the Brookville and Brooklyn campuses merged. St. John's blew past the Sharks, 22-3, in its lone meeting last season, marking the first 20-plus run effort in three years. Of the 14 offensive players to make a plate appearance, 13 scored at least one tally, eight posted multi-hit performances and six drove in two or more runs.
LIU is off to a tough start in 2023, going 3-9 through its first 12 games despite playing a competitive non-conference schedule against Florida International and Miami. However, the Sharks were able to edge the Hurricanes, 4-2, on Feb. 24, behind a nine-inning, two-run homer from UConn transfer Noah Sorensen.
The Sharks are led offensively by Jake Mastillo and JC Navarro, who account for seven of the team's 12 homers and 26 RBIs.
The opposition is hitting .363 against the Sharks this season. LIU is also ranked seventh-highest in the nation with an 11.25 ERA.
The Red Storm holds a 2-1 record all-time against Stony Brook. Wednesday will mark St. John's first meeting with the Seawolves since a 6-3 triumph on April 23, 2019. Ryan Hogan went 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored, while three others posted multi-hit performances.
Stony Brook enters the newly added contest with a 7-7 record and a four-game winning streak. The Seawolves edged out Virginia Tech in its series finale and Siena, three times, by one run.
Matt Brown-Eiring is leading the Stony Brook offense with a .404 batting average, 21 hits and 14 RBIs. Cam Santerre paces the squad with 17 runs scored. Erik Paulsen has emerged as one of the nation's toughest batters to strike out, ranking 18th in the country with a strikeout every 17.5 at-bats.
The Seawolves' pitching staff is also boasting a 1.8 strikeout-to-walk ratio, good for 53rd in Division I.
