Red Storm to begin three-game series with the Bulldogs on Friday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (10-13, 1-2) is set to continue BIG EAST play when it squares off with the Butler Bulldogs (13-12, 2-1) in a three-game series at Red Storm Field on March 15-17.
The first pitch of game one is slated for 2 p.m. on Friday followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
The entire series will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Live Stats available on RedStormSports.com. Admission at Red Storm Field is free for all fans.
St. John's has begun its 10-game homestand with a 2-3 mark. The Johnnies opened play in Queens by taking one of three games against BIG EAST rival Creighton. On Wednesday, the Red Storm welcomed Manhattan for a doubleheader, splitting the two contests by taking game one, 7-1, before falling in game two, 5-1.
London Jarrard continued her impressive offensive display against the Jaspers following a second consecutive nod to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 11. The shortstop drilled a team-leading eighth double and second triple while notching two runs scored and a pair of RBIs to help the Johnnies take down Manhattan in game one.
Senior Hannah Mearns was terrific in the circle for St. John's in its win on Wednesday, pitching five scoreless frames while recording five strikeouts. The right-hander is now 3-4 on the season with a 3.24 ERA in 41 innings pitched.
Katie Whittaker launched the 11th Red Storm long ball of the season against Manhattan. The sophomore pulled a solo round-tripper over the left field wall in the sixth inning to help secure a St. John's win and mark her second home run of the season.
Left-hander Ana Serafinko set a new career best in game two with Manhattan despite the loss. The Chino Hills, Calif., product struck out 14 Jaspers in 6.2 innings of relief work to shatter her old career-high of eight punchouts that was set last Friday against Creighton. Serafinko leads the Red Storm pitching staff with a 2.20 ERA which is good for third-best in the BIG EAST Conference.
Butler enters the weekend in third place in the BIG EAST standings with a 13-12 overall mark and a 2-1 conference record. The Bulldogs started BIG EAST play in Providence, winning two of three against the Friars. Junior Ella White has started 2024 off hot for the Bulldogs offense. The infielder is batting .411 with six home runs and 26 RBIs which places her second in the conference in all three categories. Katie Petran leads the Butler pitching staff with a 2.24 ERA in 81.1 innings pitched. The freshman was selected as the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on March 4 after tossing 17.2 innings and picking up a win and save in three appearances.
St. John's holds the all-time advantage against Butler with a 16-10 mark. Last year, the entirety of two program's scheduled three-game series was canceled due to inclement weather. However, the Red Storm and Bulldogs found themselves toe-to-toe in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Three home runs by Jarrard, Whittaker and Peyton Cody helped St. John's overcome a 4-1 deficit and secure its eighth win in the conference tournament all-time by a score of 9-6.
Following this weekend, the Johnnies will wrap up their longest homestand of 2024 with a doubleheader against Wagner on Tuesday starting at 1 p.m.
