Serafinko tosses 6.1 innings and hits a home run to lift the Red Storm over the Bulldogs
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (11-13) took down Butler (13-13), 6-3, in the opening game of the three-game series on Friday afternoon.
Starting pitcher Ana Serafinko delivered both in the circle and at the dish for the Red Storm on Friday. The Chino Hills, Calif., native picked up her third win of the season, allowing three runs on five hits across 6.1 innings while striking out nine. Serafinko also found herself in the starting batting order for the first time this season, going 2-for-3 with her first career home run during the sixth inning.
Elanna Lysiak led the St. John's offense with three RBIs in the contest. The right fielder launched a solo home run to dead centerfield before drilling a two-run triple an inning later. Lysiak now ranks fourth on the team with 10 RBIs in 2024.
Sophomore Jess Bianco was a spark for the Johnnies at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-4 while tallying her first career extra-base hit with a double in the third frame. With two more runs scored today, Bianco increased her team-leading run-scored total to 20.
In the bottom of the first, Bianco battled through a 10-pitch at-bat to single into left field. London Jarrard followed up with a base hit into right field, advancing Bianco to third and herself to second on the throw. Bianco then came in on a wild pitch to give St. John's an early 1-0 advantage.
Serafinko followed a scoreless opening frame by striking out all three Bulldogs in the top of the second to hold St. John's lead, 1-0.
The Red Storm offense struck for a second time in the bottom of the third when Bianco once again sparked the scoring with a leadoff double into right center. After a Jarrard groundout advanced Bianco to third, Cassidy Stouffer brought home the second St. John's run on a sacrifice fly into left field, 2-0.
Butler threatened in the top of the fourth, putting runners on second and third following an Ella White walk and Monique Hoosen hit by pitch. Serafinko found her way out of the jam, generating a lazy pop-up to second to keep the score, 2-0.
To open the bottom half, Lysiak drove a full-count pitch over the centerfield wall to extend the Johnnies' lead to 3-0.
Lysiak continued her impressive day an inning later in the bottom of the fifth, drilling a two-run triple over the right fielder to plate Stouffer and Celia Macari who each singled earlier in the frame, 5-0.
Butler finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. After loading the bases, Makena Alexander delivered a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side to cut into St. John's lead, 5-1. Searfinko limited the damage by retiring the final out and leaving the bases loaded.
Serafinko helped her own cause in the bottom of the sixth, launching a solo home run to center field to give the Red Storm the five-run advantage once again, 6-1.
In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs attempted to come back after Hailey Conger and Cate Lehner reached base safely to put two on with one out. Paige Dorsett then hit a two-run double into right field to make the score, 6-3. However, Loreley Francia entered the circle in relief and retired the final two batters to secure a St. John's 6-3 victory.
St. John's and Butler will continue the series at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Red Storm Field ahead of wrapping up the series Sunday at noon.
