Louis Marinaro tossed three perfect frames in relief to help Red Storm to 11th straight win
Shortstop Luke Orbon led the charge with a 2-for-5 showing at the dish, smacking his second home run of the season to go with a game-high three RBIs and two runs scored. Jimmy Keenan and Blake Mayberry posted identical two-hit, two-run outings on Tuesday, while center fielder Jackson Tucker also chipped in a pair of RBIs with a pair of knocks.
Reliever Louis Marinaro extended his scoreless inning streak to 11 frames after stifling the Manhattan lineup. The sophomore southpaw, who is coming off a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection, logged a trio of strikeouts across three perfect innings of action to earn his third win of the season.
Manhattan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Drew Wyers in the opening frame.
The Red Storm quickly responded in the home half of the first with a two-spot on the board. After a leadoff single by Tucker, Mayberry roped an RBI double into the right-center to knot the game at one. The hot-hitting Keenan stepped in and smacked a 1-2 offering through the left side to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Jaspers reclaimed a two-run edge following a solo home run from Dylan Mayer and a two-run shot by Andreaus Lewis in the top of the second.
St. John's struck again in the bottom of the frame, putting up two more to tie the game at four apiece. A two-out walk to Garrett Scavelli and a single from Anthony Brienza posed a threat to the Jaspers. Tucker unloaded on the first offering from Connor O'Neill, smacking a double off the left-field wall and clearing the bases for a 4-4 deadlock through two innings.
The Johnnies tacked on a pair of runs for the third straight frame after a one-out single from Keenan. Orbon moved the Red Storm's designated hitter to third on a double to left-center before a Scavelli infield single knocked in Keenan. Max Aude brought in Orbon two batters later on a sacrifice fly to left, lifting St. John's to a 6-4 advantage.
The Red Storm poured it on in the bottom of the fourth following a leadoff double from Mayberry and a walk to Keenan. With a little help from the wind pushing out to center, Orbon cleared the fence on a 1-0 pitch for a three-run shot and pushed the lead to five, 9-4.
Manhattan chipped away in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly, pushing its lone run across and trailing 9-5. However, the Johnnies reclaimed a five-run edge, 10-5, in the bottom of the sixth as Ben Beauchamp scored for the eighth-straight game, crossing on a wild pitch.
Marinaro came on in the sixth and dismantled the Manhattan bats over the next three innings, not allowing a hit or a walk. Sam Mettert finished the job in the ninth, closing the door with a 1-2-3 frame and marking the 15th consecutive batter retired by the Red Storm to end the game.
St. John's will continue its homestand on Wednesday when Wagner comes to The Jack. First pitch from Queens is slated for 3 p.m.
