The Red Storm take game two, 12-0, after dropping game one, 2-0
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (14-14) split a doubleheader with Wagner (3-12) on Tuesday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
The Red Storm was held scoreless in game one, falling by a score of 2-0, before exploding for 12 runs in game two to win 12-0 in five innings.
Cassidy Stouffer totaled four RBIs in the second contest, going 2-for-2 with a two-run single and double. The sophomore now has 15 RBIs on the season and leads St. John's by batting .338.
Sophomore Sabrina Seaton capped the 10-run third inning in the latter game by launching a pinch-hit three-run home run over the center-field wall. The longball marked Seaton's first this season and the second of her career.
Shortstop London Jarrard added three RBIs to her team-leading 33 on the year. The Carlsbad, Calif., pulled a bases-clearing three-RBI double down the right-field line in game two, marking her ninth two-bagger of 2024.
Game two starter Carolina Zamudio was brilliant in the circle, tossing five scoreless frames while punching out six to record her second victory of the season.
Hannah Mearns was also terrific in her game one start, going the full seven innings and allowing just two runs (none earned) while striking out six.
Game 1
Wagner jumped to an early lead in game one during the second inning. Kate Wolf reached on a miscue ahead of a Brooke Wood walk and a Leilani Gonzales single to load the bases. An out later, another miscue allowed the first Seahawks run to come home, 1-0.
St. John's Mearns and Wagner's Karson Zavala then engaged in a pitcher's duel, exchanging blank half-innings to keep the score at 1-0 after the top of the fourth.
The Red Storm's best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the fourth behind a Stouffer walk and Celia Macari single to put two on with one out. However, Zavala found her way out of the jam to hold the score at 1-0.
In the top of the fifth, Wagner tacked on another run after Jordyn Dulken singled and Lea Rachal reached on an error to put runners on second and third with one out. Sydnie Truijio then hit a sacrifice fly out to right to extend the lead, 2-0.
Amy Mallah attempted to spark the offense in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single, but Zavala proved to be too much as the Seahawks prevailed, 2-0.
Game 2
The Red Storm offense did not wait long to find the scoreboard in game two, jumping out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. After two quick outs, St. John's loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an Anese Thompson single before Stouffer hit a two-RBI bloop single into center field, 2-0.
Zamudio helped hold the lead, tossing a blank second and third to hold the score at 2-0 into the bottom of the third.
St. John's then exploded for its biggest inning of the season in the bottom of the third, plating 10 runs. Macari kicked it off by walking and advanced to third on a long single to right field by Katie Whittaker. With two on, Stouffer pulled a two-RBI double down the left-field line to strengthen the lead at 4-0. Following a Maeve Marra walk and London Slade bunt-single to load the bases, Jess Bianco drew a walk to make the score 5-0. Jarrard then stepped into the batter's box and delivered a bases-clearing three-RBI double off to right to blow the game open for the Johnnies, 8-0. A costly Wagner error on a Macari ground ball allowed Jarrard to come home, 9-0, and for the inning to continue. After another walk, Seaton launched a three-run home run over the center-field wall to cap the 10-run inning and put the Red Storm up 12-0.
The 12-0 lead was held until the middle of the fifth when the run-ahead rule was applied to end the game and seal the Johnnies' 14th victory of the season.
St. John's will be back in action when it travels to Providence for a three-game series this weekend. The BIG EAST showdown is set to start at 3 p.m. on Friday.
