QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (14-14, 4-2) is heading to Providence to take on the Friars (9-12, 1-5) for the third BIG EAST series of 2024.
The two programs will now play the opening two games of the series on Friday at 2 and 4 p.m. before wrapping up the series at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday due to expected inclement weather on Saturday.
The entire series will be broadcast on FloSports with Live Stats available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's enters the weekend winning six of its last eight contests. The Red Storm recently split a doubleheader with Wagner on Tuesday, dropping game one, 2-0, before exploding for a 12-0 win in five innings in the second contest. Last weekend, the Johnnies recorded their first conference sweep since 2019, taking all three games against the Butler Bulldogs.
Ana Serafinko was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday following her performance last week against Manhattan and Butler. The honor marked the program's first since 2019 when Madison Morris earned the nod three times. Serafinko leads the Red Storm pitching staff with a 2.23 ERA in 47 innings of work with 54 punchouts.
Sophomore Jess Bianco also earned BIG EAST honors after being tabbed to the honor roll for the second time in her career. The lead-off hitter went 8-for-16 with five runs scored, one double and two stolen bases in five games with Manhattan and Butler. Bianco is batting .326 this season and leads the team with 23 runs scored and 16 stolen bags.
Against Wagner, pitchers Hannah Mearns and Carolina Zamudio were terrific. Mearns drew the start in game one, tossing a full seven innings while only allowing two runs (none earned) with six strikeouts. In the second contest, Zamudio tallied her second win of the season, pitching five scoreless frames while punching out six.
In its last seven contests, the St. John's offense enjoyed six home runs from six different players. London Jarrard hit her team-leading fifth longball in the Red Storm's 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Katie Whittaker and Elanna Lysiak each crushed their second round-tripper while Melanie Santos, Sabrina Seaton and Serafinko notched their first.
Providence enters the weekend with a 9-12 record and 1-5 mark in BIG EAST play. The Friars most recently swept a doubleheader against Stonehill College on Wednesday, winning both games in five innings. In conference play, Providence opened by taking one of three against Butler before being swept by first-place Villanova last weekend.
St. John's holds an all-time record of 58-43 against the Friars. Last year, the two teams opened conference play against each other in Queens with the Red Storm taking two of three. In the rubber match, the Johnnies won 2-1 behind a complete-game seven-strikeout shutout by Zamudio.
After Providence, St. John's will stay on the road for a midweek tilt at Iona starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
