PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John's softball team (15-15, 5-3) split a doubleheader with Providence (10-13, 2-6) on Friday afternoon at Glay Field.
The Red Storm took game one in extra innings by a score of 3-2 before dropping the second game, 2-1.
London Jarrard led the Red Storm offense, going a combined 7-for-8 between the two contests. The shortstop could not get off base in game one, recording a 5-for-5 day at the dish including a team-leading ninth double in the first inning.
Right-hander Loreley Francia helped the Red Storm to the extra-inning victory in game one, throwing a career-high nine innings. The Spring, Texas native allowed just two earned runs while punching out seven in her sixth win of the year.
Lead-off hitter Jess Bianco was a spark for the Red Storm offense all afternoon. The sophomore tallied four hits while scoring three runs. Bianco is now hitting .337 with 26 runs scored this season.
Game two starter Hannah Mearns was terrific in the circle, allowing just two earned runs across six innings while striking out six.
Game 1
St. John's opened game one with an early chance to score behind Jarrard slapping a double into left field with one out in the top of the first. However, Providence's Tori Grifone found her way out of the jam, recording the final two outs to keep the score 0-0.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first following an Emma Eichten lead-off single and Emma Douma RBI double.
After a scoreless second, the Red Storm offense kicked off the top of the third with a pair of singles by Bianco and Jarrard to put two on. Two outs later, Katie Whittaker delivered the game-tying RBI single into left field to knot the game, 1-1.
The score remained even until Providence's Sofia Peterson broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run off to left, 2-1.
The Johnnies responded right back with Bianco and Jarrard singling to lead off the frame for the second time in the contest. A Cassidy Stouffer walk then loaded the bases with no outs. An out later, Whittaker hit a ground ball to short and an errant throw home allowed Bianco to come across, 2-2.
Francia then settled in, hurling three clean frames to keep the score at 2-2 into extra innings.
The two teams remained in a standstill until the top of the ninth when Jarrard led off the frame with a bunt single to mark her fifth hit of the contest. After advancing to second on a throwing error and third on a passed ball, Stouffer hit a sacrifice fly into left field to give St. John's its first lead of the game, 3-2.
In the home half of the ninth, Francia sealed the Red Storm's 3-2 win, completing her career-high ninth inning of work.
Game 2
Providence struck first in the second contest when Rachael Petrarca hit an RBI double into left to take a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.
Bianco and Jarrard each singled once again to kick off the top of the third. Stouffer then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third before Celia Macari hit a sacrifice fly to even the score, 1-1.
St. John's Mearns and Providence's Alyssa Twomey then engaged in a pitcher's duel, exchanging blank half-innings through six and a half frames.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Friars finally cracked the scoreboard again. Hanna Aldrich led off the inning with a single up the middle before being brought home on a Jacque Harrington RBI single.
Twomey completed the game in the top of the seventh, securing Providence's 2-1 triumph.
