Jake Wright set a career-high with three points
The St. John's lacrosse team fell short on Saturday against Jacksonville, 24-7, at Rock Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Jake Wright set career-highs in goals and points, netting a pair of scores and adding a helper. The two goals were his first tallies of 2024.
Bobby Seel scored a pair of goals to extend his team-best goal and point streaks to eight games. Seel has tallied three straight multi-point performances and has five outings of at least two points this season. Through seven games, the junior is up to 17 points on the season, surpassing his total of 15 from 2023.
Sean Duffy and freshman Dylan Lee each found the back of the net for the second time this season while Evan Stowe recorded his first goal of 2024. Lee also scooped three groundballs.
Brian Kelly tallied his team-leading ninth assist to stretch his point streak to six games. The junior attackman now sits at 113 career points and is two points away from tying Eric DeJohn for 12th place on the program's all-time scoring list.
Luke Mangan recorded his first two assists of the season, matching his career-high set on March 4, 2023, against Binghamton. Saturday was Mangan's first multi-point effort of the season and first since March 18, 2023.
Defensively, Jack Schirtzer caused three turnovers and scooped three groundballs. Harry Noel grabbed a team-best four loose balls.
Dane Armstrong had a strong game at the faceoff 'X', winning 12-of-21 draws against the Dolphins, marking his first time this season he tallied double-digit faceoff wins in a game.
Jacob Grenier led the way for Jacksonville, scoring a game-high six goals. Nicky Brown added a hat trick and two assists while Jackson Interieri netted a pair and added six helpers. Eight players had multi-point outings and 14 players scored a goal for the Dolphins on Saturday. Between the pipes, Ryan Della Rocco made 10 saves on 16 shots faced.
The Dolphins opened the scoring 3:42 into the contest, converting on the man-up, and made it 2-0 less than a minute later off a rip from the right side. Jacksonville scored seven more unanswered goals in the frame to take a 9-0 lead after the first.
After three Dolphins goals stretched the lead to 12 to open the second quarter, Duffy put an end to the run, scoring on a bounce shot into the right side of the goal. The Red Storm (1-6) scored again nearly three minutes later when Seel fired a rocket past Della Rocco off a feed from Wright, cutting the deficit to 10. Wright scored the third goal in a row for the Johnnies, taking a feed from Mangan and converting on the man-up, shrinking the Jacksonville lead to 12-3. The Dolphins scored one more in the frame to take a 13-3 advantage into the locker room.
Jacksonville (2-3) scored seven seconds into the third quarter, but Lee put one in the back of the net 11 seconds later after scooping the loose ball on the ensuing faceoff and running the length of the field himself for the long-pole-goal. After another Jacksonville score, Wright netted his second of the afternoon off of Kelly's pass to make the score 15-5. Four unanswered scores by the Dolphins gave them a 14-goal advantage, 19-5. Seel put an end to the run with 6:03 left in the frame for his second of the day off Mangan's second helper of the game.
The Dolphins scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to give the home squad its largest lead of the afternoon, 23-6. Stowe ended the run with 1:40 to go, giving the Johnnies their seventh goal of the contest. One more Jacksonville goal put a cap on a 24-7 win for the Dolphins.
The Red Storm will return home next Saturday against Binghamton for its first of four games at Belson Stadium. Faceoff is set for noon and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
