Red Storm picks up 13th straight victory, longest winning streak since 2015
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (16-4) marked its 13th straight win with a 9-0 shutout against Fordham (7-14) on Friday at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Johnnies also moved to 12-0 in Queens with the victory.
Xavier Kolhosser tossed seven shutout innings in his fifth win of the season. The 6-foot-5 hurler also struck out five batters in his longest career outing. The Johnnies' starter faced 31 batters in the victory while throwing 107 pitches on the afternoon. Relievers Ben Adams and Tim Cunningham finished off the shutout in the eighth and ninth frames to secure the team's second shutout of the year.
The Red Storm forced Fordham to go 4-for-17 at the dish with runners on and stranded 13 Rams on base in Friday's win. The nine-run victory was also the largest margin of victory in a nine-inning shutout since downing Hofstra, 9-0, on March 24, 2019.
Third baseman Blake Mayberry registered a 3-for-4 day at the dish with three RBIs and a run scored against the Rams. Jimmy Keenan and Garrett Scavelli each smacked a homer on Friday, also logging two RBIs apiece. Junior Luke Orbon also posted a multi-hit performance with a run scored.
Kolhosser found himself in trouble with one out in the opening frame, loading the bases with a walk and back-to-back singles. The Red Storm starter induced a 5-2 putout at the plate and blew a fastball past T.J. Wachter for strike three, minimizing the threat and keeping the Rams scoreless.
The Rams threatened again in the second innings, putting runners on the corners with one out. Fordham's Chris Genaro tried to swipe second immediately, but Keenan threw him out on a perfect strike and kept the runner at third at bay. Kolhosser got out of the frame unscathed with a flyout to center.
The Johnnies broke through in the home half of the second. After Paul Orbon singled, swiped second and advanced to third on a failed pickoff, Scavelli clobbered a 3-1 pitch over the left-field wall for a two-run shot, his first at the Division I level.
Keenan put the Red Storm up three with a solo shot in the third. The White Plains, N.Y., native roped a 1-2 offering from Declan Lavelle over the scoreboard in left-center for his fifth of the season and a 3-0 edge.
Kolhosser worked himself into trouble again in the fifth, loading the bases on a pair of free bases and a base knock. The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native forced Steve Luttazi into a 4-6-3 twin-killing to keep the Rams off the board.
The Johnnies scored again in the fifth, this time on a wild pitch exchange. Anthony Brienza and Jackson Tucker were both plunked with one out in the frame. Tucker was caught too far off the bag at first and found himself caught in a rundown. Meanwhile, Brienza cruised into third and eventually broke for the plate on the throw, evading the tag and scoring the fourth Johnnies' run.
Kolhosser cruised through the sixth and worked two quick outs in the seventh. After allowing a four-pitch walk, it looked like the Red Storm hurler was going to be taken out after 100-plus pitches, but stayed in and retired Andrew Kanellis on a 5-4 fielder's choice to complete the longest outing of his career.
After a blank sixth inning, St. John's unloaded a four-spot in the seventh frame. The Johnnies rattled off five straight hits with Tucker smacking a one-out single, followed by a double to left-center from Beauchamp to put two runners in scoring position. Mayberry turned on a 1-1 pitch and doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases with the two-run knock, 6-0. Keenan proceeded to rope an RBI triple into the same corner before Luke Orbon brought the Red Storm catcher around on a single through the right side for an eight-run advantage.
Mayberry struck again in the eighth with an RBI base knock through the hole at short, bringing around Brienza, who reached on a leadoff double, for the ninth Red Storm tally.
Adams and Cunningham came on in the final two frames, respectively, and kept the Rams at bay for the team's second shutout of the season.
St. John's will head to the Bronx on Sunday for game two against Fordham. First pitch from Houlihan Park is slated for 1 p.m.
