PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John's softball team (15-16, 5-4) dropped the series finale to Providence (11-13, 3-6) on Sunday afternoon at Glay Field.
Cassidy Stouffer led the Red Storm offense going 2-for-4 with her ninth double of the season.
Catcher Celia Macari drove in the lone run for the Johnnies on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. The North Providence, R.I., native now has six RBIs in 2024.
Jess Bianco and Amy Mallah each recorded two hits as well in the contest.
The Red Storm did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the rubber match. London Jarrard continued her hot hitting in the series by singling off the left-field wall ahead of a Stouffer double down the left-field line to put runners on second and third with one out. Macari then drove in the first run of the ballgame on a sacrifice fly to center, 1-0.
Starter Ana Serafinko backed the offense by pitching three clean frames, allowing just one hit while striking out three to hold the score at 1-0 after the third.
Providence evened the score in the bottom of the fourth behind a pair of doubles. Hanna Alrdrich hit the first two-bagger into right-center ahead of touching home on a Sofia Peterson RBI double, 1-1.
The Friars followed up by taking their first lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Gabriella Lee RBI single, 2-1. With runners on second and third, Loreley Francia entered the circle in relief and limited the damage, recording two outs to hold Providence's lead to just one.
In the top of the seventh, Providence's Alyssa Twomey pitched a clean inning to secure her second win of the series and the Friars' 2-1 victory.
St. John's will be back in action for a midweek matchup at Iona on Tuesday afternoon. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Donald E. Walsh Field.
