QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (15-16, 5-4) is set for a midweek in-state matchup at Iona (5-15, 2-1) on Tuesday in New Rochelle, N.Y.
The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on Iona Insider with Live Stats available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm enters Tuesday after returning from a three-game series at Providence over the weekend. In the opening game, St. John's edged Providence, 3-2, in nine innings before dropping the final two games of the series both by a score of 2-1.
London Jarrard was terrific in the series, going 8-for-12 (.667 batting average) with her tenth double of the season and two runs scored. The shortstop kicked off the series with a career-high 5-for-5 day from the dish. Jarrard leads the Red Storm slashing .359/.421/.641 to go along with a team-high five home runs and 33 RBIs.
Sophomore Loreley Francia helped guide the Red Storm to its series-opening win at Providence, allowing just two earned runs across a career-high nine innings of work while striking out seven. The Spring, Texas product leads the Johnnies with 72.2 innings pitched and 79 punchouts. Francia has either started or appeared in 12 of St. John's 15 victories this season to accumulate six wins and two saves from inside the circle.
Alongside Francia, Ana Serafinko, Hannah Mearns and Carolina Zamudio have helped the Red Storm maintain a team ERA of just 2.65 in 209 innings this season. Serafinko leads the squad with a team-low 2.32 ERA in 51.1 innings.
Lead-off hitter Jess Bianco has continued to be a spark for the St. John's offense this season. The centerfielder is currently batting .343 with a team-high 26 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 2024.
The Gaels enter Tuesday with a 5-15 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the MAAC. Iona just opened up conference play against Fairfield this past weekend, taking two of three games against the Stags.
Senior Jamie Sheeran leads the Gaels hitting .328 with one home run and five RBIs. Last season, the catcher was selected to the All-MAAC Second Team after setting the program record with 16 long balls.
St. John's holds an all-time record of 21-7 against Iona and has won three of the last five matchups with the Gaels. The two teams last met on April 5, 2023, in Queens when the Johnnies prevailed, 5-2. Anese Thompson helped lift the Red Storm on a tie-breaking two-run home run in the third inning of the contest.
After Tuesday, St. John's will head to the Windy City to wrap up its road trip with a three-game series against DePaul on March 28-30.
