Red Storm secured 13th consecutive win at home, longest streak since 2011
QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore Mario Pesca dominated the Fordham lineup through 6.2 innings of work, earning his third win of the season in the St. John's baseball team's 8-2 victory at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Monday. The Red Storm (17-5) also captured its 13th-straight win at home, the longest streak to open the 2011 campaign.
Pesca rattled off a career-high eight strikeouts while surrendering just one run on two hits. The Bronx native also retired the side in order on three occasions.
Jackson Tucker produced a 3-for-4 outing at the dish against the Rams (8-15), chipping in two RBIs and three runs scored. Blake Mayberry also reached base safely in all five plate appearances on Monday, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. The Philadelphia product also logged an RBI and a tally in the victory.
After a 1-2-3 opening frame from Pesca, the Johnnies tacked on two in the home half. Tucker walked to start the first inning before Orbon reached on an error and Mayberry took a pitch off the helmet to load the bases. Beauchamp slapped the first pitch he saw up the middle and brought in two runs for a 2-0 lead.
Following a blank second inning, the Red Storm pushed another run across in the third on a dropped popup to take a 3-0 edge.
Pesca tossed his fourth-straight scoreless frame, retiring the side in order for the third time in four innings. The Rams' Daniel Bucciero sat down on strikes to open the fourth before the Johnnies' starter punched out Tommy McAndrews for the final out of the stanza.
Mayberry cashed in with an RBI single in the fourth inning. After a one-out hit from Tucker and Orbon taking a pitch off the knee, the Johnnies' third baseman ripped an RBI knock to right, bumping the Red Storm lead to four.
Fordham broke through in the top of the fifth as first baseman Steve Luttazi smacked a solo homer to cut its deficit to three, 4-1.
Both teams were held off the board until St. John's posted a three-spot in the home half of the sixth following a leadoff single from Brienza. After swiping second, Brienza came around to score on a Tucker RBI single up the middle in the following at-bat. The Red Storm loaded the bases shortly after, seeing back-to-back walks to Orbon and Mayberry. Keenan plated one on a sacrifice fly to left, only to see Orbon proceed behind on a passed ball to take a 7-1 lead.
Tucker drove in another run in the bottom of the seventh, lacing a double through the right side. Brienza chugged around to score from first, evading the tag at the plate and pushing the Johnnies ahead, 8-1.
Jed Boyle came on in the eighth and struck out the first two batters he faced. The right-hander forced a 6-4 putout at second to end the frame, keeping the Red Storm lead at seven.
Fordham added one run in the ninth before St. John's closed the door on the six-run victory, combining to allow just four hits in the contest.
The Red Storm will return to The Jack on Thursday when Winthrop comes to town for a three-game series. First pitch from Queens is slated for 3 p.m.
