The Johnnies secure their third blanking of the season
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Xavier Kolhosser and Blake Mayberry put forth career performances in the St. John's baseball team's 6-0 shutout over Winthrop at Bartoszek Field on Friday afternoon.
Kolhosser dismantled the Eagles (11-13) with just 80 pitches across seven innings of work, 59 of which went for strikes. The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native surrendered just three hits en route to his sixth win in seven tries, marking the third time this season he has logged no walks in an outing. The Red Storm's starter has notched 14.1 innings of scoreless work, dating back to the fifth inning of the team's 19-3 win over Rider on March 15.
Mayberry also put forth a career day with a 5-for-5 showing at the dish, marking the first player to record five base knocks in a game since teammate Luke Orbon did the same at William & Mary last season (April 1, 2023). The Philadelphia native also fell a home run shy of the cycle, chipping in three RBIs and a run scored on the afternoon.
Jackson Tucker scored twice in Friday's win, also posting three stolen bases and an RBI in the contest. The Staten Island native is also the last player to register three or more swipes in a game, doing so against Villanova on May 6, 2023.
Kolhosser faced immediate danger in the opening frame after Charlie Evans smacked a triple to left-center on the first pitch. The righty remained calm and kept everything in the infield to get out of the early jam.
The Red Storm (18-5) also threatened in the first inning, loading the bases with a walk to Jackson Tucker, Ben Beauchamp being hit by a pitch and Mayberry lining a single off Winthrop starter Riley Huge's glove. The Eagles' ace struck out the side to halt the threat, seeing three of his 10 strikeouts coming in the opening stanza.
Kolhosser settled in with a pair of strikeouts in the second inning, retiring the side in order and keeping the game scoreless.
The Johnnies capitalized with a two-spot in the home half of the frame. Following a single from Garrett Scavelli, who advanced to second on a balk, Tucker slapped an RBI single up the middle to give the Red Storm a lead it would not relinquish. Two batters later, Mayberry replicated Tucker's swing with an RBI liner into center for a 2-0 edge.
Mayberry broke through again in the bottom of the fourth, 3-0, lacing an RBI triple to right-center after Tucker walked and swiped two bags. In the fifth inning, Scavelli brought in Aries Samek on an RBI rip up the middle to claim a four-run lead. The Johnnies added two more in the sixth with Mayberry smacking an RBI double and guiding the team to a 6-0 advantage.
Kolhosser was perfect in his final three innings of work, inducing nine outs on 31 pitches to close his day. The Red Storm's starter hurled just six pitches in his final stanza, punching out Nate Chronis to end the seventh. Kolhosser struck out the final batter of the frame in five of his seven innings of action.
Ben Adams and Kyle Chase each tossed a perfect inning in relief for the Red Storm, combining to throw 16 of their 24 pitches for strikes over the final two frames to secure the Johnnies' third shutout of the season.
St. John's will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a doubleheader against Winthrop on Saturday. First pitch from Queens is slated for 11 a.m.
