St. John’s Remains Unbeaten at Home Following Doubleheader with Winthrop

Red Storm secures 18-4 victory in game one, followed by 6-6 draw in game two
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (19-5-1) took its three-game series with Winthrop (11-14-1) after earning an 18-4 win in game one, followed by a 6-6 tie in game two at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Saturday.
The Red Storm remains undefeated at home with a 14-0-1 record. The Johnnies emerged victorious in 15 of its last 17 games after rattling off 24 runs on 22 hits in 14 innings on Saturday.
Second baseman Anthony Brienza put together a stellar afternoon in Queens, going 4-for-8 in two games with three triples, a home run and seven RBIs.
Game 1
Starter Mario Pesca took a no-hitter into the final frame of the Red Storm's 18-4 victory over Winthrop in game one, marking the team's second-highest scoring output of the season
Pesca battled through six hitless frames before surrendering his first hit of the afternoon with no outs in the seventh. The 6-foot-8 hurler out of the Bronx struck out five batters and tossed 92 pitches in his fourth win of the season.
Brienza led the way offensively with a 3-for-4 showing at the dish, chipping in five RBIs and three runs scored. The Marlboro, N.J., native smacked a pair of triples in the contest, marking the first Johnnies to do so since Jackson Tucker registered two of his own against Seton Hall on April 16, 2023.
Ben Beauchamp also logged three hits and three tallies in the opening contest while Blake Mayberry matched the duo with three scores of his own. Ten different players registered an RBI while all nine starters crossed home plate at least one time in the win.
Pesca tossed a 1-2-3 opening frame before a Mayberry RBI groundout in the home half put the Johnnies ahead, 1-0.
The Red Storm settled in defensively in the second inning as the middle infield turned a 6-4-3 double play and halted any chance by the Eagles.
St. John's added two more runs in the bottom of the second with one swing of the bat. Following a Max Aude ground-rule double to right-center, Brienza smacked a 1-1 pitch over the right-field wall for the first of his career, giving the Johnnies a three-run edge.
The Johnnies continued to add to its lead with another two runs in the bottom of the third. Beauchamp laced a leadoff double to left-center before Mayberry drew a walk with no outs. Three batters later, Aries Samek roped a double into the left-center gap and cleared the bases for a 5-0 advantage.
Pesca instrumented a 1-2-3 frame in the fifth inning. After striking out Chancellor Jennings to open the frame, the righty forced Charlie Evans to swing and miss through strike three for the final out.
The Red Storm unloaded nine runs in the bottom of the fifth. After Beauchamp scored on a wild pitch, Orbon shelled an RBI single to right for a 7-0 lead. The Red Storm loaded the bases with one out and saw a two-run single off the bat of Scavelli to bump the advantage to nine. Brienza produced a two-run triple before Tucker sent a sacrifice fly down the right-field line to secure a 12-0 lead. Keenan continued the offensive onslaught with an RBI double into the left-field corner. Mayberry finished off the scoring by touching home plate on a wild pitch and giving the Red Storm a 14-run cushion.
St. John's unleashed four more tallies in the sixth, starting with an RBI double from Aude. Two batters later, Brienza ripped his second triple in as many at-bats into the alleyway in the right-center, increasing the Johnnies' lead to 16. Beauchamp smacked an RBI single before a bases-loaded walk to Jace Jeremiah capped the Red Storm advantage at 18-0.
Winthrop broke up Pesca's no-hitter in the seventh inning with a single up the middle, going six full innings before allowing the base knock. The Eagles scored four in the final frame before the Red Storm shut the door on a 14-run victory.
Game 2
The Red Storm drew with Winthrop in game two, 6-6, after erasing a three-run deficit in the final inning.
Brienza and Tucker rattled off two RBIs apiece in the contest while the latter registered a team-best three knocks in the final game of the series.
After back-to-back scoreless frames to open the contest, Winthrop secured its first lead of the weekend with a four-spot in the third.
The Red Storm chipped away at the Eagles' edge in the second. Tucker doubled down the left-field line before swiping third, scoring on Mayberry's sacrifice fly and bringing the Johnnies within three, 4-1.
The Eagles went back up by five in the fifth inning, seeing a two-run homer from Cole Griffith to go up, 6-1.
The Johnnies did not go down quietly, posting two runs in the sixth to pull within three, 6-3. After loading the bases on a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch, Tucker floated a looping single behind first base, bringing Samek and Paul Orbon around to score.
Reliever Tim Cunningham came on in the top of the seventh and found himself in a bases-loaded jam. The graduate student settled in with a strikeout to Jennings and forced Chazz Grossington to ground out to second, ending the Eagles' threat.
Trailing by three heading into the seventh, the Red Storm battled the Eagles' bullpen. Luke Orbon walked with one out before moving over to third following a wild pitch and tagging up on a flyout to center. Down to their final strike, the Johnnies caught a break as Paul Orbon reached on an error by the Eagles' second baseman, bringing his younger brother across for the team's fourth run. Scavelli kept the inning alive with a high chopper to third and beat out the throw at first to put runners on first and second with two outs. After taking the first pitch for a strike, Brienza launched his third triple of the afternoon into right-center, clearing the bases and tying the game at six.
Due to getaway day drop time, St. John's and Winthrop finished the game tied at six after seven innings.
St. John's will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium on Tuesday to wrap up the team's elongated stretch in Queen with a 3 p.m. matchup against Fairfield.
