Jimmy Keenan drives in career-high six RBIs in Tuesday’s victory
Keenan's six-RBI effort is the first since Aaron Mann tallied six against Quinnipiac on March 20, 2023. The sophomore finished the day a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and a run scored.
Blake Mayberry and Luke Orbon each tallied two RBIs in the contest, while Ben Beauchamp, Paul Orbon and Mayberry scored two runs apiece. Jackson Tucker led the game with three tallies of his own
Starter Chris Batuyios secured his first collegiate win on Tuesday, going three innings and surrendering just one unearned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts in a bullpen day for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm broke out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame after putting runners on first and third with no outs. Keenan laced an RBI single up the middle to bring Tucker around to score and moved Garrett Scavelli over to third. The Red Storm catcher drew a throw down to second on a steal attempt, allowing Scavelli to score and giving the Johnnies a two-run edge.
After a blank second frame, the Gaels capitalized on a Red Storm throwing error in the third, seeing Anthony Zollo score to pull within one, 2-1.
AJ Lausten made his collegiate debut in Tuesday's contest, tossing back-to-back scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth. The Hartford, Wis., native allowed just one hit and struck out two batters in his two frames of work.
The Red Storm unloaded three more runs in the fifth to go up by four. Paul Orbon smacked a single to right before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Tucker was plunked for the second time, Mayberry ripped an RBI single to right, bringing the elder Orbon around to score for a 3-1 edge. Five pitches later, Keenan ripped a bases-clearing double down the left-field line for a 5-1 advantage after five innings.
St. John's poured it on with a nine-spot on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Orbon ripped his first offering from Tyler Lender deep to right for a two-run shot and a 7-1 Johnnies' lead. After a bases-loaded walk to Mayberry, Keenan ripped a three-run triple to center, putting the Johnnies up by double digits, 11-1. The Red Storm catcher came around on the very next pitch as Agresti roped a double to left for a 12-1 lead. Paul Orbon also drew a bases-loaded walk before Anthony Brienza smacked a sacrifice fly to right to plate Beauchamp for a 14-1 advantage.
Reliever Chad Falcon tossed two scoreless frames, blanking the Gaels through the sixth and seventh innings with just one hit allowed and a strikeout. Chuck Sanzio finished off the game with a pair of empty stanzas to secure the 13-run victory.
St. John's will return to action this weekend when Hofstra comes to Queens for a three-game series, beginning on Friday. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
