The Red Storm dropped a midweek contest to the Seawolves on Wednesday
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (21-18, 10-5) fell at Stony Brook, 9-0, in six innings on Wednesday afternoon.
Anese Thompson finished the afternoon 1-for-2 with a single to lead the Red Storm offense.
Centerfielder Jess Bianco notched her team-leading 18th walk and 23rd stolen base in the contest.
Bianco attempted to get the Red Storm offense on the board early, drawing a lead-off walk and swiping second to provide an early runner in scoring position. However, Stony Brook's Mia Haynes recorded the next three outs to keep the game scoreless.
Stony Brook (21-13, 9-6) then jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first by loading the bases for Naiah Ackerman who walked to bring home the first run of the ballgame, 1-0.
An inning later, the Seawolves tacked on more when Catherine Ann Kupinski hit a lead-off home run, 2-0. Ackerman then hit a two-run homer to put Stony Brook up 4-0 after three.
In the top of the fourth, St. John's attempted to respond by generating a two-out rally behind Ana Serafinko reaching on an error and a Thompson single to put two on. Haynes got out of the jam, retiring the final out to keep the score 4-0.
The Seawolves tacked on three more runs in the home half of the fourth and a pair in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the run-ahead rule and secure the 9-0 victory.
St. John's will stay on the road when it travels to Villanova for a three-game series this weekend. The series opener is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Friday.
