Cassidy Stouffer and London Jarrard each tallied three RBIs in the contest
The Red Storm jumped out to a 9-1 advantage in the top of the fourth before the Wildcats scored 12 unanswered runs to take game one of the series.
Cassidy Stouffer drilled her second home run of the season in the contest to cap a five-run third inning for St. John's. The sophomore finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs on the afternoon.
Shortstop London Jarrard went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to now sit one away from the century mark in her career. The Carlsbad, Calif., product has 42 RBIs this season which already tops her career-high in a single season.
Sophomore Elanna Lysiak finished with a career-high three hits in the contest, including a double and an RBI single. Lysiak now has six doubles and 14 RBIs on the season.
Sydney Totarsky and Natalie Casto each chipped in RBIs to round out the scoring for the Red Storm.
The Johnnies threatened right away, loading the bases with one out behind a pair of singles by Jarrard and Stouffer to go along with starting pitcher Ana Serafinko reaching on an error. However, Villanova's Kelsey White got out of the jam, recording the final two outs to keep the game scoreless, 0-0.
In the bottom half, Villanova landed on the scoreboard first following a Tess Cites lead-off double before coming around on an Ava Wagner RBI single, 1-0. Serafinko minimized the damage by striking out the side and holding the Wildcats to just one run.
St. John's responded right back in the second, Lysiak started the frame with a double and came around on a Totarsky single back up the middle, 1-1. Totarsky then swiped second before Jarrard brought her in on an RBI single through the right side, 2-1.
Serafinko settled back in, striking out her fourth batter of the game while retiring Villanova in order to hold the St. John's 2-1 lead.
The Red Storm offense continued its impressive start in the third, scoring five runs to extend its lead to a six-run advantage. Melanie Santos walked and Amy Mallah singled to kick off the inning. Vilanova then recorded two outs before Totarsky extended the inning with a walk to load the bases. Jarrard then delivered her second RBI hit of the contest, singling up the middle to extend the lead to 4-1. Stouffer followed up by launching a three-run homer over the left-field wall to provide St. John's with a six-run advantage, 7-1.
After another clean frame in the circle, Serafinko led off the top of the fourth at the dish by sending a double into deep center field. Santos then reached on an error to put two on with no outs. An out later, Lysiak lined a single back up the middle to bring home Serafinko and advance Santos to third, 8-1. Casto then drove in the second and final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, 9-1.
The Wildcats notched their first runs since the opening frame in the home half of the fourth, plating seven runs on five hits and three walks to cut into St. John's lead, 9-8.
Villanova continued to capitalize on the momentum from the previous inning, producing a five-run fifth frame that was capped by a Franz three-run home run to take the lead, 13-9. Hannah Mearns then entered in relief, punching out a pair to help limit the damage.
The score remained 13-9 until it became the final as Villanova secured the series-opening win.
The Red Storm and the Wildcats will continue the series tomorrow at noon from the Villanova Softball Complex. Game two will be broadcast on FloSports with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
