The Red Storm dropped game one of the series despite London Jarrard’s ninth home run of the year
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 26, 2024) – The St. John's softball team (25-24, 12-10 BIG EAST) fell to Seton Hall, 4-1, in the series opener on Friday afternoon.
The Pirates (24-19, 11-8 BIG EAST) took the lead with a three-run home run and never surrendered it following that point. All five runs between the two teams were scored via the long ball.
London Jarrard cranked her team-leading ninth home run in the bottom of the third inning over the right-field wall. The shortstop now has 48 RBIs on the year, leaving her just one shy of tying Erin Burner's single-season program record set back in 2015.
Starter Ana Serafinko put together a strong performance inside the circle for St. John's. The left-hander tossed the complete seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while racking up seven strikeouts. Serafinko boasts a team-best 2.61 ERA and 136 punchouts this season.
Celia Macari and Anese Thompson also recorded a base hit apiece in the contest for the Red Storm offense.
After a pair of scoreless frames to open the ballgame, Seton Hall put up three runs in the top half of the third to take the lead. With one out, Kelsey Carr walked and Oliva Gilbert reached on a miscue before Katey Brennan hit a three-run home run, 3-0.
St. John's responded right back with a blast of its own in the bottom half when Jarrard stepped into the box and launched a solo home run off to right field, 3-1.
Serafinko settled back into the circle after the third, notching a 1-2-3 fourth and fifth frame before working around a Lela Allen double in the sixth to keep the score at 3-1 into the seventh.
Caroline Hobbes helped the Pirates tack on an insurance run in the final inning, hitting a solo home run off to left, 4-1.
The Red Storm flirted with a comeback in the bottom of the seventh after Melanie Santos drew a lead-off walk and Thompson reached on an infield single to put two on with two outs. Seton Hall then intentionally walked Jarrard to load the bases before Carr recorded the final out to seal the 4-1 win.
St. John's and Seton Hall will continue the series at 1 p.m. at Red Storm Field tomorrow. The Johnnies will honor their three graduating seniors with a ceremony after the contest.
