St. John’s Breaks School Record at Penn Relays

The Red Storm shattered the school record in the sprint medley relay by seven seconds
PHILADELPHIA – The St. John's track & field team wrapped up its weekend competition against the nation's best at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Saturday morning.
The relay group of Brooklyn Chestnut, Amarachukwu Obi, Chinenye Onourah and Nora Haugen shattered the previous sprint medley relay program record of 3:56.32 from the 2016 Penn Relays on Friday night. The squad recorded a 3:49.46 mark for ninth place in the event.
Jamora Alves continued her impressive sophomore season in Queens with a ninth-place result in the discus championship on Saturday morning. The Grenada product produced a toss of 47.09 meters.
Claire Cushing made her first appearance at the longest-running track and field competition in the United States on Thursday in the 5,000-meter championship. The graduate student kept a brisk pace to tally an outdoor season-best time of 17:21.06.
In the 4x200-meter relay, the Red Storm's relay squad of Delicia Bent, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji, Tea Siehou and Chestnut registered a mark of 1:39.99 for 13th place. The same group also provided a 46.31-second result for 15th place in the 4x100-meter relay.
Onourah, Nia Holden, Obi and Haugen provided the Johnnies with a season-best effort of 3:43.19 in the 4x400-meter relay. The group finished the race in 13th place.
In the shot put, Juliet Smith earned a 12.43-meter heave in her first appearance at the Penn Relays.
The Red Storm will return home next weekend for the Tom Farrell Classic and Senior Day. The meet will be held on May 4 at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y.
