The Red Storm tallied 19 top-five finishes
NEW YORK – The St. John's track & field team tallied 19 top-five finishes on Saturday, as the program impressed at both Miami's Hurricane Alumni Invitational at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla and the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium in New York, N.Y.
Metropolitan Outdoor Championships:
As a team, the Red Storm finished in second place after racking up 121 total points at the local championship. Fordham took first place with 173 points.
Juliet Smith grabbed the second win of her collegiate career in the shot put with a 13.05-meter throw. Desiree Pagan finished in fifth after producing an 11.43-meter hurl. Pagan went on to take the top podium spot in the discus after posting a 40.22-meter heave.
Fia Viklund won the triple jump after registering a personal-best 11.54-meter leap. Ioanna Kyprianou notched a 10.08-meter jump for fifth place.
Martina De Buglio put forth a collegiate-best 48.84-meter heave in the hammer throw for second place. Pagan placed fourth off a personal-record 47.19-meter toss while Smith earned a sixth-place 38.89-meter launch.
Berit Friedenbach and Colette Metcalf each recorded a second and third-place finish in the pole vault, respectively. Both vaulters went over the 3.30-meter bar in the event.
In the 100-meter dash, Ava Mabry-Spencer followed up her impressive performance last weekend with a 12.53 mark for third place. Karese Lloyd also tallied points for the Johnnies with a time of 13.07 to place sixth.
Gabriella Caronia participated in the 5,000-meter run for the first time this season and added a third-place finish on a 17:51.17 result.
St. John's distance relay group of Jenna D'Onofrio, Ana Dobsa, Leilani Robinson and Ezgi Yasar finished the 4x800-meter relay in 9:47.26 for third place.
The Red Storm staked a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run as Robinson paced the race in 2:16.77.
Jalen Jackson came in fifth place in the 200-meter dash off a personal-best 26.09 finish.
Ashley Sadler brought home a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a 1.53-meter mark. Ruth Smith followed behind her in fifth with a 1.48-meter jump in the event.
Two Johnnies placed in the top six in the long jump. Sadler took home a fifth-place finish from a 4.78-meter leap and Kyprianou placed sixth off a 4.66-meter jump.
Sophia Leslie tallied points for St. John's in the 400-meter hurdles. The freshman placed seventh at a season-best 1:10.11 pace. Ciara Wiltshire finished the competition in ninth, posting a personal-best mark of 1:11.21.
Hurricane Alumni Invitational:
Claire Cushing continued her dominant season in distance events, logging a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. The graduate student paced the race in 4:34.49.
In the 400-meter dash, Chinenye Onourah registered a 54.28-second mark for seventh place. Nora Haugen recorded a ninth-place result on a 55.99-second finishing time.
The Red Storm's relay squad of Brooklyn Chestnut, Delicia Bent, Tea Siehou and Cassandra Lemus-Sodji earned a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a finishing time of 46.06.
Nia Holden added an 11th place finish on a 2:12.86 mark in the 800-meter run to the Johnnies' day in Miami.
Maddie Kelso-Heap and Zamira Ysaac rung up eighth and ninth place finishes in the 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Kelso-Heap finished the race in a season-best 1:03.64 while Ysaac registered a time of 1:04.48.
Ysaac also added a new personal-best time in the 100-meter hurdles by completing the race in 15.01 seconds.
The Red Storm will head north next weekend to Storrs, Conn., for the UConn Northeast Challenge from April 12-13.
