St. John’s Takes Fifth Place at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Chinenye Onuorah took home gold in the 400-meter run
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The St. John's track & field team finished out its final day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by JEEP at the Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa., on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm tallied 110.5 points across 22 events to finish in fifth place. UConn came in first with 210.33 points, followed by Villanova (141.5), DePaul (134) and Georgetown (114). The Johnnies racked up nine podium finishes, including a win in the 400-meter run.
The sprinters took over the podium at the conference championships as Chinenye Onuorah grabbed gold in the 400-meter run for the second year in a row. The junior logged a personal-best 53.35 effort while Amarachukwu Obi paced the 400-meter final in 55.30 to finish fourth.
Onuorah found herself on the podium again after pacing the 200-meter dash in a personal-record 24.06 for third. Obi finished in 24.89 seconds, landing her eighth in the event.
Nora Haugen added a second-place result to the Johnnies' final day at the BIG EAST Championships by breaking the program record in the outdoor 800-meter run. The sophomore's 2:04.77 mark beat out Claire Mooney's previous finish of 2:05.08 from the 2016 NCAA Regionals.
Brooklyn Chestnut landed on the podium in the 100-meter dash for the second straight season after breezing through the event in 11.95 for third. Cassandra Lemus-Sodji finished the race in 12 seconds for fifth. Delicia Bent rounded out St. John's effort in the event final with a 12.12 result to place seventh.
The Red Storm's throws group started off their final day of the league championships strong, notching nine points in the discus. Jamora Alves found the podium with a bronze medal off a 47.78-meter heave. Maja Henry and Martina De Buglio finished in seventh and eighth, registering throws of 42.87 and 40.44 meters, respectively.
Alves picked up her second podium finish of the day, this time by throwing the shot put 14.10 meters for third. Juliet Smith nabbed a seventh-place result in the event off a 13.47-meter hurl.
The Johnnies claimed another bronze medal in the 4x100-meter relay. The relay squad of Bent, Lemus-Sodji, Tea Siehou and Chestnut sprinted the race in a season-best 45.87 seconds for third.
In the triple jump, Fia Viklund engineered a career-best 11.71-meter leap to finish in sixth and score three points.
In the first conference event final of her collegiate career, Maddie Kelso-Heap placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles off a personal-record 1:02.52 finishing time. Zamira Ysaac recorded a 1:04.46 result to end in eighth.
In the 4x800-meter relay, the group of Claire Cushing, Ezgi Yasar, Jenna D'Onofrio and Leilani Robinson put forth a seventh-place effort on a 9:08.49 mark.
The Red Storm closed out conference competition in impressive fashion by taking silver in the 4x400-meter relay. The relay team of Obi, Nia Holden, Onuorah and Haugen paced the race in a season-best 3:40.01, just .01 seconds behind first-place Villanova.
