Haugen ran a school-record 2:02.68 in the 800-meter run
LEXINGTON, Ky. – In her first national appearance, Nora Haugen punched her ticket to the NCAA Track & Field Championships at the East Regional at the UK Track & Field Complex in Lexington, Ky., on Saturday evening.
"Nora wants it to be known that she's a sprinter. Every time she's ran the 800, she gave it 100 percent like it's the last time she'll run it," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Aliann Pompey, OLY. "Although she's new to the event she approaches it like a pro. The pace was fast, but she was patient and stuck to the race plan. That is incredibly hard to do when you're in last place at the halfway point. She never counted herself out."
Running in the third heat of the 800-meter quarterfinals, the sophomore broke her own school record for the second time in three days with a spectacular mark of 2:02.68. Haugen ran a magnificent race, battling back from last place in her heat midway through the event to finish in fourth.
The track standout's pace on Saturday was almost a full second better than her previous fifth-place mark of 2:03.42 from the first round of the east regional. The Sandnes, Norway native placed 11th overall in the race.
The Red Storm has now had a Johnnie qualify for the NCAA Championships in two straight seasons for the first time since the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. Jamora Alves went to the national championships in the discus last year. Furthermore, the All-BIG EAST Team member is the first St. John's track & field student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters since Claire Mooney in 2016.
The sophomore has now broken school records in the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run and the sprint medley relay six times throughout the 2024 track & field campaign. The former BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week has also racked up six wins and has found the podium 11 times across three events during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Next up, Haugen will head to Eugene, Ore., to battle against the best in the country at the NCAA Track & Field Championships. Haugen will hit the track on Thursday, June 6 at 7 p.m. for the 800-meter national semifinals at historic Hayward Field.
