Red Storm starter Xavier Kolhosser tosses career-high 8.2 innings of work in no-decision
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The St. John's baseball team (37-17-1) fell to Mississippi State (39-21), 5-2, in 10 frames in the opening round of the NCAA Charlottesville Regional on Friday evening inside Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.
Red Storm starter Xavier Kolhosser posted a team-high and career-high 8.2 innings of work in the setback. The righty struck out seven batters while allowing just two runs on seven hits. Kolhosser tossed the longest outing by a Red Storm pitcher in an NCAA Tournament game since the turn of the century.
Marty Higgins delivered the big stroke for the Red Storm offensively, driving in both Red Storm runs with a 1-for-3 day at the dish. Jackson Tucker and Anthony Brienza tallied two hits apiece in the contest.
The Johnnies and Bulldogs were held scoreless in the opening frame. Mississippi State broke through in the second inning with a two-run home run from Logan Kohler, taking a 2-0 lead.
Kolhosser and Bulldogs' Khal Stephen continued to pester the opposition with another blank stanza in the third, neither allowing a runner past first base.
St. John's threatened in the top of the fourth, seeing Tucker legged out an infield single to short before Blake Mayberry laced a double down the right-field line to put runners on second and third with one out. Two batters later, Higgins slapped a 0-1 offering from Stephen into left-center for a two-run single and knotted the game at two.
Kolhosser continued to get stronger over the next three innings. After retiring the first two batters in the fourth, the right-hander allowed a double to Kohler. The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native worked out of the threat by reeling in an over-the-shoulder catch behind the mound to put away Aaron Downs for the final out of the inning.
The Johnnies' ace retired eight straight batters starting with the inning-ending catch, including a trio of Bulldogs on strikes. The Red Storm's starter blew strike three past Downs and forced Joe Powell to fly out to center to end the frame in the bottom of the seventh.
Kolhosser continued to pound the zone in the eighth, retiring the side in order and catching Dakota Jordan looking at strike three to end the stanza. The 6-foot-5 hurler found himself in some trouble in the ninth, allowing a leadoff single to Hunter Hines. Mississippi State nearly walked off in the final frame of regulation but Garrett Scavelli pulled back an Amani Larry frozen rope to left and kept the game tied at two. Reliever Louis Marinaro came on in relief and struck out Kohler to end the ninth and force extras.
Mississippi State walked off in the 10th inning on a three-run homer by Dakota Jordan to secure a 5-2 win.
St. John's will return to action against fourth-seeded Penn on Saturday. First pitch from Charlottesville is slated for noon.
