Levy and Tran record goals as Red Storm win 13th-straight home opener
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team started off the 2024 campaign strong on Sunday afternoon, logging a 2-0 victory over Colgate at Belson Stadium.
Senior forwards Lauryn Tran and Jordyn Levy tallied goals as the Red Storm won its 13th consecutive home opener, dating back to 2012.
Tran picked up right where she left off as the team's leading returning scorer notched a tally just six minutes into the 2024 campaign. The Calgary, Canada native recorded four shots with all four on target.
Levy converted from the penalty spot in the 66th minute to double the Red Storm lead. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native penalty make marked the first of her collegiate career and she led all players with five shots.
St. John's dominated offensively and peppered 19 total shots, a program most since it had 22 against Columbia on Aug. 27, 2021.
Louisville transfer Malene Nielsen logged a clean sheet in her first start for the Red Storm. The goalkeeper recorded five stops in the opener.
Jailene DeJesus registered four shots at Belson Stadium with two on target, including the strike that the rebound led to Tran's tally.
Five St. John's players- Nora Basile, Reese Dunaway, Juliana Dane, Abby Fitzmaurice and Freya Meadows-Tuson all made their first collegiate starts on Sunday.
In the sixth minute, DeJesus battled for possession inside the 18-yard box. After winning the ball the midfielder fired a strike that was blocked, tried her luck again but the shot was turned aside and dropped to a waiting Tran, who tucked home the first goal of the 2024 campaign.
Levy had a glaring opportunity after she forced a turnover intercepting a goal kick and darted towards the goal but the strike whistled wide in the 25th minute.
Dane had the final threatening chance of the first half in her first collegiate start. After an exchange with Madison Mariani, Dane put one on frame but it was tapped over the bar by Colgate's Alli Popham in the 35th minute.
The Johnnies went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead and outshot the Raiders, 14-2, through 45 minutes.
In the latter half, St. John's was awarded a penalty kick after a Raiders handball in the box in the 66th minute. Levy stepped up to the spot and buried a hard grounder into the left corner to double the Red Storm advantage, 2-0.
Colgate (0-2, 0-0 Patriot League) began to generate chances and delivered a dangerous strike from just outside the 18-yard box in the 72nd minute but a sprawling Nielsen deflected it away and then tracked it down to avoid a corner.
The Red Storm preserved the clean sheet and advanced to 1-0 to start the year under Head Coach Ian Stone, who began his 31st season at the helm.
St. John's will hit the road on Thursday night for its next contest at Towson. The match is slated to kick-off from Tiger Field at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
