Red Storm began the season with a 2-0 win over Colgate
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team will hit the road for the first time during the 2024 campaign when it travels to Towson for a Thursday night match.
The contest from Tiger Field will kick-off at 6 p.m. Matt Muddiman will have the call on FloSports.
The Red Storm started strong on Sunday afternoon, logging a 2-0 victory over Colgate at Belson Stadium. Senior forwards Lauryn Tran and Jordyn Levy tallied goals as the Red Storm won its 13th consecutive home opener, dating back to 2012.
The team's leading returning scorer, Tran tucked home a rebound for the game-winner just six minutes into the season. The Calgary, Canada native, who ranked top-10 in the BIG EAST in points last year, fired four shots on target against the Raiders.
After a handball in the box, Levy sent home a penalty kick to double the Red Storm lead, 2-0, in the 66th minute. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native finished with a career-high five shots and converted the first penalty attempt of her collegiate career.
For the second-consecutive year, Athina Sofroniou earned the first edition of the BIG EAST Player of the Week after a stout performance at center back. The senior captain played all 90 minutes and held Colgate scoreless in a shutout effort.
Malene Nielsen registered a clean sheet and five saves in her first appearance with the Johnnies.
St. John's dominated offensively in its season opener, peppering 19 total shots, the program's highest mark since it had 22 against Columbia on Aug. 27, 2021. The Red Storm rank 11th in the country in corner kicks per game (10.0) and 31st in shots on goal per contest (10.0) as of Aug. 21.
Thursday's contest will mark the first meeting between the two programs since 2016 and the fourth all-time. St. John's holds a 2-0-1 series over Towson and last visited Tiger Field eight years ago. The two squads battled for 120 minutes in its last meeting, grinding to a scoreless draw, 0-0, after double overtime in Maryland.
Towson is set to host its home opener on Thursday and enters the match with a 1-1 record on the year. The Tigers earned their first win of the 2024 campaign in a 1-0 decision at local foe UMBC. Rebecca Groseibl tallied the game-winner as the game was suspended on Sunday to due to weather and completed on Monday afternoon. The squad fell in its season opener on the road to RV/23 Virginia, 2-0, on Aug. 15 in Charlottesville.
The Tigers are coming off their best season in program history, compiling a program-best record of 15-3-2 a year ago. Towson captured the 2023 CAA Tournament and Regular Season Championships, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. Head Coach Katherine Vettori's squad was picked third in the CAA Preseason poll.
After winning four of the six major postseason awards in the CAA last year, the Tigers return three preseason all-conference selections – Riley Melendez, Demi Pierre, and Maja Hannson. Melendez recently broke the school record for shutouts in the win over UMBC with her 29th clean sheet.
Following Thursday's contest, the Johnnies will wrap up its two-game road stint heading to Yale on Aug. 28 for a meeting at Reese Stadium.
