Levy Beats Buzzer as St. John’s Downs Saint Joseph’s in Dramatic Fashion, 1-0

Levy netted the game-winner with one second remaining
QUEENS, N.Y. – With just one second left on the clock, Jordyn Levy steered a ball into the back of the net in thrilling fashion to beat the buzzer and down Saint Joseph's, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Levy scored the game's lone goal off a free kick at 89:59 in the final moment of the game to lift the Red Storm to victory after playing nearly the entire second half with 10 women. The senior's deciding strike was her second of the season.
St. John's with the thrilling win moves to 2-1-1 on the year and remains undefeated at home. The Red Storm recorded a season-high 20 shots with seven on frame. In two games at Belson Stadium, the Johnnies are averaging 19.5 shots per game.
Emily Riggins and Athina Sofroniou tied for the game-high with four shots. Freshman Nora Basile added three strikes with two on frame.
Malene Nielsen logged her second clean sheet of the season and picked up two saves. The defense held strong allowing previously undefeated Saint Joseph's (4-1-0) to just four shots and two on target.
In the early going, a cross from Basile drifted towards a Saint Joseph's defender. The referees went to the monitor to review it, but the call was upheld and a penalty kick was not given.
Basile had the first look on target in the 11th minute as the Long Island native delivered a ball on frame but was corralled by Hawks' Katie Cappalletti.
In the 43rd minute, Janelle Sylvestre crossed one into the box that was settled by Madison Mariani. The freshman directed the ball to the center of the 18, finding a waiting Stephanie Cornelius, who ripped a shot just over the bar. The two sides went to the locker room scoreless.
The Johnnies went down a player after a red card was issued in the 47th minute. Despite playing with 10 women, the Red Storm kept the throttle on offensively, outshooting the Hawks, 11-2, in the final 45 minutes.
In the 62nd minute, St. John's was awarded a free kick in a favorable spot right inside the arc at the top of the 18-yard box. Sofroniou fired a line drive past the wall, but it was stopped in its tracks.
The Johnnies continued to knock on the door as Riggins played a pass to a streaking Mariani, who got a touch over the goalkeeper's head but didn't have enough power and was booted away by a Hawks' defender.
As St. John's continued to dominate the ball with 61 percent possession on the day, outside back Abby Fitzmaurice had the next near opportunity on net, launching a strike from 20 yards out just outside of the goalpost.
Another optimal free kick position arose in the 82nd minute as Riggins took a try on net but Cappalletti made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
