Red Storm look to remain undefeated at Belson Stadium
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team will look to remain undefeated at home when it hosts Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The first meeting in 20 years between the Hawks and Red Storm will be streamed on FloSports. Ralph Bednarczyk and Joey Jarzynka will have the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Join us at Belson Stadium for a celebration of Johnny Thunderbird, the official mascot of St. John's Athletics' 15th birthday party.
The Red Storm put forth a masterful offensive display on Thursday, ripping off its highest shot total in at least two decades in a 2-0 victory over UAlbany to move to 3-0 at home. The Johnnies recorded 37 shots, the second highest single-game total by a BIG EAST team this season.
St. John's (3-1-1) now ranks 21st in the country in shots per game (19.8) after Thursday's dazzling performance. The squad outshot the Great Danes, 37-2 in the win at Belson Stadium. Through five games, the Johnnies have outshot their opponents, 99-30 and averaging 25.3 strikes per outing at home.
For the second-straight game, Jordyn Levy provided the game-winner scoring her team-leading third goal. After scoring the decisive tally with just :01 remaining against Saint Joseph's on Sunday, the senior got on the end off a cross Janelle Sylvestre to put the Red Storm in front in the 33rd minute.
Emily Riggins doubled the lead in the latter half against the Great Danes. The junior captain scored her first-career goal in world-class fashion sending a missile into the top left corner of the net from 20 yards out off an assist from Sylvestre.
Sylvestre tallied the first two collegiate points of her career on Thursday. The Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada native became the first St. John's freshman to log a multi-assist game since Ava Collins on Feb. 21, 2021. Additionally, the winger recorded a season-high six shots.
Defensively, St. John's proved stout once again recording its third shutout of the year. Malene Nielsen and Kayla Bower each played a half on Thursday and combined for the clean sheet. The Red Storm currently rank 19th in NCAA Division I in goals allowed average (GAA) at a mark of 0.40 and have only conceded twice in five contests.
The CAA Preseason favorites, Monmouth enter Sunday's third-consecutive match with an unscathed record of 4-0-2. The Hawks are riding a two-game winning streak in which they have outscored opponents, 8-1 and hold a tie against then-No. 21 Virginia Tech. The squad is undefeated through six matches for the first time since the 1995 season and have only allowed three goals all season.
Summer Reimet leads Monmouth offensively with five goals and two assists on the year (12 points). The junior netted the game-winner in Thursday's dominant 5-1 win at Lehigh. Underclassmen Ashley Lavrich and Liza Suydam have provided an attacking threat ranking tied for second on the team with eight points. Goaltender Cassie Cotter has played every minute for the Hawks and boasts a 0.50 GAA and 83.3 save percentage.
The Hawks and Red Storm will meet on the pitch for the first time in 20 years on Sunday. The match marks the 14th all-time between the programs and Monmouth leads the series, 7-5-1. The two sides met annually from 1988-91 and 1996-2004. St. John's has taken four of the six meetings played in Queens.
Following Sunday's matchup, the Johnnies will close out their homestand on Thursday against Cornell at 7 p.m.
