St. John’s Battles Unbeaten Monmouth to Scoreless Draw

Red Storm have not allowed a goal in 351 minutes of play
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2024)– The St. John's women's soccer team battled undefeated Monmouth to a scoreless draw, 0-0, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Queens, 0-0.
The two sides went back-and-forth in a defensive-minded battle. Monmouth held the slight advantage on shots, 13-11.
For the second-straight game, Kayla Bower and Malene Nielsen combined a shutout Kayla Bower made her second-straight start and played the first 45 minutes. The junior made a career-high three saves. Nielsen recorded four stops in the latter half.
St. John's (3-1-2) has played 351 consecutive minutes since conceding a goal. The Red Storm have tallied four shutouts on the year in six matches, including three-straight and hold a goals against average of 0.33.
After scoring her first-career goal on Thursday night, Emily Riggins recorded a team-high three shots, including two on frame.
Janelle Sylvestre logged two strikes on Sunday. Mia Agresti and Telma Steindórsdóttir each added a shot on target in the tie with the Hawks.
Bower came up big on the first Hawk's opportunity of the match in the 23rd minute. The junior goalkeeper batted away a cross then sprinted forward to halt the rebound chance from Summer Remiet.
Riggins had the best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes with a blistering line drive from 30 yards out that lined into the waiting arms of Monmouth (4-0-3) goalkeeper Cassy Coster.
Bower made an outstanding stop in the 31st minute. After a turnover, Reimet took a go on net firing a strike towards the left corner before Bower sprawled out and made a crucial stop to keep the score level.
Both sides went into the break scoreless at the break with the Hawks leading in the shot department, 6-3.
Sylvestre had the first chance of the latter 45 minutes delivering a high-arcing shot from the far-side of the box that nearly dropped into the net but fell into the top of the twine in the 47th minute.
As the Red Storm continued to apply attacking pressure, Steindorsdottir had a chance off a corner kick as the Iceland native hit a bouncing volley directed at the near post that was smothered by Coster in the 72nd minute.
Tran had a breakaway down the right flank but as she looked to fire a shot she was met by a Monmouth defender and the ball went out for a corner kick.
The Red Storm had the final opportunity earning a free kick in its own offensive half near midfield. Athina Sofroniou played a ball that was headed by Alyssa O'Brien but the attempt went wide of the goal as the clock expired.
The Red Storm will close out its four-match homestand on Thursday night when it welcomes Cornell.
