St. John’s Takes Down Fairfield, 4-1, in Season Opener

The Johnnies improve to 1-0 for the 10th straight season under Head Coach Lauren Leo
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team recovered from a 1-0 deficit to take down Fairfield, 4-1, on Friday at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Johnnies (1-0) have won their season opener in each of the past 10 years under Head Coach Lauren Leo.
After dropping the team doubles point, the Red Storm rallied in singles play, winning the first four singles contests to finish off the opening day victory.
Alicia Gomez and Victoria Papadopoulou kicked off doubles action, picking up a 6-4 win on the No. 3 court over Maeve Cassidy and Lily Manliowski. Fairfield (0-1) triumphed on the No. 1 and 2 courts to take the team point.
Down 1-0, Nicoline Sartz-Lunde brought the home squad even with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory on the No. 2 singles court against Fairfield's Sarah Liu.
Giulia Bizzari gave the Johnnies their first lead of 2025 as the freshman earned her first win of a college career, taking down Cassidy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Gomez made the score 3-1 for St. John's on the No. 5 court, besting Malinowski in two frames, 6-4, 6-1.
Flagler transfer Charlotta Buss closed the door for the Red Storm on the No. 4 court with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win for her first win in a St. John's Uniform.
The Johnnies will return to action on Jan. 29 when they take on Rider at Cunningham Park.
