St. John’s Opens 2025 With Convincing 6-1 Win Over Binghamton

The Johnnies beat the Bearcats for the seventh-straight meeting
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team opened its 2025 dual-match slate with a strong 6-1 triumph over Binghamton on Friday night in Binghamton, N.Y. The Johnnies (1-0) have won seven consecutive season-openers and eight of the last nine.
St. John's won the doubles point before taking five of six solo contests to close out its first win of the season.
In doubles action, Carl Gustavsson and Danilo Raicevic made quick work of James McPherson and Andre Ajed on the No. 2 court, 6-1. After the Bearcats evened the score on the No. 1 court, Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves continued their success from last season and took down Andrew Fang and Filipe Costa, 7-5, to claim the team doubles point for the visitors.
Up 1-0, Leonardo Mileikowsky got his first victory of the year, beating McPherson on the No. 5 court in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-2. Lamar transfer Max Amling got his first win in a St. John's uniform on the No. 1 court, 6-3, 6-3, over William Morais Binni, giving the Johnnies a 3-0 advantage.
Ryota Kaneda made it 4-0 when he took down Fang in straight sets on the No. 6 court, 7-5, 6-2. After Binghamton got on the board to make it 4-1 with a win at No. 3, Ignacio Vinas defeated Ajed, 7-6, 6-4, and Carl Gustavsson put a wrap on the evening with a three-set triumph over Ronin Lotikar, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.
With the win, St. John's improves to 9-1 all-time against the Bearcats and has won each of the last seven meetings.
The Johnnies will return to the court tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Niagara back at the Lane-Stark Tennis Center in Binghamton.
