St. John’s Takes Down Niagara, 5-2, in Binghamton

The Johnnies have improved to 2-0 in six straight seasons
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team won its second match in as many days on Saturday, taking down Niagara, 5-2, at the Lane-Stark Tennis Center. With the victory, the Johnnies improved to 2-0 for the sixth consecutive season.
The Red Storm dropped the team doubles point but recovered in singles play, winning five contests to earn the win over the Purple Eagles (0-1).
In doubles action, Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves won their second match of the season as a duo, besting Trevor Masi and Jose Maria Garcia, 6-4, on the No. 3 court. Niagara won on the No. 1 court and squeaked out a 7-6 decision on the No. 2 court to claim the point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
When the scene shifted to singles play, Armando Sotelo pitched a shutout against Rohan Srivastava on the No. 6 court, 6-0, 6-0. Danilo Raicevic continued the dominance on the No. 2 court, taking down Vin Marcin in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Sophomore Marco Cinotti earned his first singles victory of the 2025 season with a strong performance on the No. 5 court against Ben Kowal, 6-3, 6-1. Kaneda gave the Red Storm its fourth point of the afternoon with his second win of the weekend, besting Maria Garcia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
After Niagara picked up its second point of the match on the No. 1 court, Ignacio Vinas' 6-1, 7-6 triumph over Gurustat Makkar wrapped up the 5-2 win for the Johnnies.
The Johnnies improve to 3-0 all-time against Niagara with the win, picking up its first neutral site win over the Purple Eagles. Next time out next Wednesday, St. John's will play at home for the first time in 2025 when Quinnipiac comes to Queens. First serve from Cunningham Park is set for 10 a.m.
