St. John’s Sweeps Doubleheader over Quinnipiac and Rider, 4-0 and 6-1

The Johnnies move to 4-0 for the first time since 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team defeated Quinnipiac and Rider on Wednesday at Cunningham Park. St. John's swept the Bobcats in the early game, 4-0, and earned a convincing 6-1 decision over the Broncs in the nightcap.
With the two victories, the Johnnies improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2021.
The Johnnies made quick work of Quinnipiac in the day's opener, earning a 4-0 sweep over the visitors from Connecticut. The Johnnies won the team doubles point and never looked back, winning the first three singles contests to pick up their third win of the young campaign.
Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda kicked things off for the Red Storm in the first match, taking down Yasha Laskin and Csanad Nyaradi, 6-3, for their third win of the season as a pair. After Quinnipiac took the No. 1 court, Leonardo Mileikowsky and Ignacio Vinas toughed out a 7-6 decision on the No. 2 court over Elias Hoxha and Finn Burridge to claim the team point for the home side.
Up 1-0, Mileikowsky continued his strong play into singles action, dominating Carl Sjoholm on the No. 5 court, 6-1, 6-1, giving the Red Storm a 2-0 advantage. Vinas gave St. John's a commanding 3-0 lead on the No. 4 court with a 6-3, 6-4, straight-set triumph over Hoxha. Sam Edgar finished off the sweep on the No. 3 court, handling James Lorenzetti, 6-4, 6-4.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Johnnies swept all three matches in doubles play before taking five-of-six singles contests to outlast Rider, 6-1.
Doubles play began with Vinas and Mileikowsky picking up their second win of the day, shutting out Matt Froberg and Dylan Lachmanen, 6-0. Carl Gustavsson and Max Amling earned their first win as a pair this season, 6-1, over Roger Martinez and Giacomo Ghitti, clinching the team point. Groves and Kaneda's second win of the day and fourth victory in four matches this season, a 6-2 triumph over Cooper Dillon and Ibragin Turgambekov, closed out the doubles sweep.
In singles action, Mileikowsky finished off his four-win day with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Matt Griscti on the No. 3 court, giving the Red Storm a 2-0 lead. The lead was pushed to three on the No. 5 court as Kaneda took down Cole Thurgur in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Edgar made it 4-0 for the home side on the No. 2 court, pulling out a 6-1, 7-6 decision over Matt Froberg. Marco Cinotti won a tight first set, 7-5, over Nathan Slattery, but dominated the second game, 6-2, to give the Red Storm a 5-0 advantage before Amling rallied past Dhruv Tangri on the No. 1 court, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4, giving the Johnnies their sixth and final point of the contest.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Friday for another twin-billing against FDU and Morgan State. Matches will start at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Cunningham Park.
