St. John’s Set to Play Four Matches in Three Days This Week

The Red Storm will host Quinnipiac, Rider, Morgan State and FDU
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a pair of wins in Upstate New York last weekend over Binghamton and Niagara to open the 2025 season, the St. John's men's tennis team will return to Queens this week for four matches over the next three days. On Wednesday, the Red Storm will host Quinnipiac at 10 a.m. and Rider at 1 p.m. The Johnnies play Morgan State and FDU two days later at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. All four matches will be at Cunningham Park.
Last Friday, the Johnnies took down Binghamton, a 2024 NCAA Tournament team, 6-1 to open the season. The next day, the Johnnies rallied after dropping the team doubles point to handle Niagara, 5-2, to finish off opening weekend.
Ryota Kaneda picked up where he left off in 2024, winning four matches over the weekend. The senior won a pair of singles contests and went 2-0 in doubles play alongside Adam Groves. Also in doubles action, Carl Gustavsson and Danilo Raicevic earned a win together. Ignacio Vinas was victorious in both singles matches he played, while Max Amling recorded his first win in a St. John's uniform.
Quinnipiac comes to Queens winless, having lost its first two matches of the season on the road against NJIT, 0-7, and Penn State, 1-6. James Lorenzetti is the lone Bobcat to pick up a win in singles play, emerging victorious on the No. 5 court against the Nittnay Lions. Elias Hoxha and Finn Burridge swiped a doubles win on the No. 3 court against the Highlanders.
The Johnnies enter Wendesday's contests a perfect 8-0 against Quinnipiac all time. When the team's squared off a season ago, St. John's earned the 7-0 win behind a pair of victories from Gustavsson and Leonardo Mileikowsky.
Wednesday's match will be Rider's first spring competition. The Broncs played three dual-matches in the fall, picking up wins over Wagner and Lafayette. In the fall, Matteus Froberg Dahlin and Cole Thurger eached picked up a pair of wins in singles play to lead the squad. St. John's has won both matches it has played against Rider, most recently a 6-0 St. John's triumph on March 21, 2021.
Morgan State is 0-1 on the year, falling at Delaware last Friday, 6-1, in its season opener. Mikeal Carpenter earned the lone point of the match for the Bears, picking up a three-set win on the No. 1 singles court. This will be the first-ever matchup between the St. John's and Morgan State.
The Red Storm's final opponent of this four-match stretch, FDU, will open its season on Friday in Queens. Last year, the Knights went 13-7, falling to Saint Francis in the NEC Tournament Semifinals. The Johnnies will look to improve to 10-0 all-time against FDU on Friday. The last time the two programs faced, the Johnnies made quick work of the Knights, picking up a 7-0 sweep on Feb. 27, 2019.
Following this week's slate, the Red Storm will have a week off before traveling to West Point, N.Y., next weekend for matches against Marquette, Georgetown and Army.
