St. John’s Wins Third-Straight Indoor Metropolitan Championship Title

The Red Storm scored 247.50 total points
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team claimed its third-straight Indoor Metropolitan Championship Title on Friday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
As a team, the Red Storm racked up a whopping 247.5 points, beating out second-place Fordham by 44.5 points. The squad earned 10 wins and 28 top-five finishes at the local championship.
At the conclusion of the meet, Nora Haugen was named the Simon Hodnett Outstanding Performer Award recipient for the second-straight year. The award is dedicated to the late Simon Hodnett, the long-time head coach of LIU, for his legacy of hard work and dedication to track & field.
Haugen registered a victory in the 800-meter run, breaking her own school record of 2:07.65 in the event from the 2023 BIG EAST Indoor Championships with a 2:06.25 finish. Leilani Robinson earned a silver medal in the race with a finishing time of 2:17.29.
Danella Dawkins grabbed a gold medal in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a finishing time of 8.85 seconds. The graduate student just beat out Fordham's Kylie Ritz by .01 seconds for first place.
Chinenye Onuorah and Nyla Henderson took home first place and second place in the 400-meter dash, respectively. Onuorah finished the event in 55.46 for first place while Henderson finished right behind her on a season-best mark of 57.75. Jalen Jackson and Ryana Dennis also scored points for the Red Storm in the event, posting times of 58.20 and 58.48 for fourth and sixth place.
Onuorah staked her second win of the day, this time in the 200-meter dash, as the Red Storm claimed four of the top-six spots in the event. The junior finished the race in 24.67 seconds, before Amarachukwu Obi took second with a 25.02-second effort. Jackson came in fourth with a 25.61-second finish, while Karese Lloyd placed sixth on a result of 25.73.
Jamora Alves continued her stellar season picking up a win in the shot put. The junior notched a throw of 15.20 meters, beating out second place by nearly a full meter. Juliet Smith and Desiree Pagan finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place with tosses of 12.25 and 12.15 meters, respectively. Alves went on to earn a silver medal in the weight throw, producing a heave of 16.55 meters.
St. John's swept the podium in the pole vault, as Colette Metcalf, Berit Friedenbach and Virginia Lloret all medaled. Metcalf and Friedenbach put together vaults of 3.30 meters for first while Lloret finished with a mark of 3.15 meters for third place.
St. John's swept the relay competitions, winning all four in dominant fashion. The Red Storm's 4x200-meter relay squad of Lloyd, Jade Dockery, Dawkins and Ashley Sadler won the event, beating out their competition with a 1:43.65 mark. Robinson, Ana Dobsa, Maddie Kelso Heap and Ezgi Yasar totaled a finishing mark of 9:29.46 for first place in the 4x800-meter relay.
Ciara Wiltshire, Dennis, Djassi Dean and Henderson paced the 4x400-meter relay in 3:52.76. In the 4,000-meter distance medley, Naiara Garcia, Onuorah, Haugen and Leyre Campo De Quevedo raced to first place on a finishing time of 11:59.47.
In the one-mile run, Campo De Quevedo raced in the event for the first time in her St. John's career, posting a result of 5:03.26 for second place.
In her first 1,000-meter run showing of the season, Ezgi Yasar rang up a second-place effort on a 3:02.12 mark in the race.
Fia Viklund logged a silver medal in the triple jump, registering a leap of 11.45 meters.
Kelso Heap notched a third-place result on a personal-record 1:16.04 effort in the 500-meter run. Garcia followed right after her, finishing in fourth place at a pace of 1:16.78 in her event debut.
Lloyd, Obi, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji and Ava Spencer all came in third through sixth place in the 60-meter dash. Lloyd garnered a bronze medal with a mark of 7.76 seconds, right before Obi and Lemus-Sodji who tied for a time of 7.88 seconds. Spencer rounded out the Johnnies' effort in the event with a 7.97 second finish for sixth.
In the long jump, Lemus-Sodji finished with a bronze medal off a leap of 5.46 meters. Ruth Smith grabbed a fourth-place finish in the high jump, matching her personal-best with a 1.60-meter result.
In her first-ever track & field 5,000-meter run, Brenin Mahon earned the Johnnies a point with a 19:56.76 mark for eighth place.
The Red Storm will be back in action next weekend it when comes back to Ocean Breeze for the Big Apple Classic on Feb. 8.
