St. John’s Gears Up for Split Action on Saturday

The Red Storm will compete in the 117th Millrose Games and the Big Apple Classic
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off its third-straight Indoor Metropolitan Championship Title, the St. John's track & field team will split up between the 117th Millrose Games and the Big Apple Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The 117th Millrose Games will take place at The Armory in Manhattan, starting at 11 a.m., while the Big Apple Classic will be held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. beginning at 3 p.m.
The Red Storm's relay squad of Amarachukwu Obi, Chinenye Onuorah, Nyla Henderson and Nora Haugen will compete in the world's longest-running track and field competition's college 4x400-meter relay, marking the second-straight year the Johnnies have competed in the event. Last season, St. John's took first place in the prestigious competition, beating out second-place Fordham by nearly three seconds with a mark of 3:45.72.
Last weekend, the Red Storm took home its third-straight Indoor Metropolitan Championship title, after earning a whopping 247.5 points and beating out second-place Fordham by 44.5 points. The squad earned 10 wins and 28 top-five finishes at the local championship meet.
At the conclusion of the meet, Haugen was named the Simon Hodnett Outstanding Performer Award recipient for the second-straight season, after notching gold medals in the 800-meter run and the 4,000-meter distance medley. The junior broke her own indoor 800-meter school record of 2:07.65 in the event from the 2023 BIG EAST Indoor Championships with a 2:06.25 finish in the event.
Onuorah tallied three wins at the local championship meet, taking home gold medals in the 400-meter run, the 200-meter dash and the 4,000-meter distance medley. Onuorah finished the 400 meters in 55.46 for first place, before posting a 24.67-second effort in the 200-meter dash.
Jamora Alves continued her stellar season picking up a win in the shot put. The junior notched a throw of 15.20 meters, beating out second place by nearly a full meter. The Grenada native went on to log a second-place finish in the weight throw, after producing a heave of 16.55 meters.
St. John's swept the podium in the pole vault, as Colette Metcalf, Berit Friedenbach and Virginia Lloret all medaled. Metcalf and Friedenbach put together vaults of 3.30 meters for first while Lloret finished with a mark of 3.15 meters for third place.
Additionally, the Johnnies won all four relay races, racking up gold medals in the 4x200-meter relay, the 4x400-meter relay, the 4x800-meter relay and the 4,000-meter distance medley.
Following this weekend's split action in New York City, the Red Storm will partake in its first meet outside of New York when it heads to Boston for Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational from Feb. 14-15.
