St. John’s Takes Down No. 18/21 Oklahoma State, 74-67

Red Storm record highest ranked win since it defeated then-No. 4/5 UConn on Feb. 21, 2023
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team took down No. 18/21 Oklahoma State on Wednesday night, 74-67. The Red Storm earn its highest ranked victory since it shocked No. 4/5 UConn on Feb. 21, 2023, 69-64, at the XL Center in Hartford.
The Johnnies record their first non-conference regular season victory since they outlasted then-No. 17/18 Nov. 29, 2015. The last St. John's ranked win came on Jan. 3, 2024 against then-No. 19/20 Marquette, 57-56.
After carrying a double-digit lead at halftime, the Cowgirls rallied to retake the lead in the third frame and tied the game heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, St. John's poured in 27 points, its highest single quarter total of the season to take home a ranked victory. The Red Storm move to 3-0 at home this season.
The Johnnies contained the nation's second-best scoring offense coming into the game to just 67 points, nearly 40 points below their previous season average. The Red Storm held the Cowgirls to just 25 first half points.
For the second game in a row, Brooke Moore led St. John's with a team-high 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting. Kylie Lavelle logged 12 points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting, a career-high six assists and five rebounds. Sa'Mya Wyatt continued her efficient play recording 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting and eight boards.
For the second straight game, St. John's shot better than 58.0% from field goal range going 26-for-44 (59.1%) from the floor.
St. John's outrebounded Oklahoma State by double-digits, 31-21, which came into the game with a plus-26.8 rebounding margin good for second in the nation. The Red Storm dished out 17 assists and is averaging 19.5 helpers per contest over the last two games.
The Johnnies went 5-of-7 to start the game building an early 12-5 lead at the first media timeout. Lavelle nailed a corner triple and Moore finished an and one in the opening minutes. Lavelle got one to fall inside the paint as the cushion rose to double-digits, 15-5, with 4:10 left in the frame. The Cowgirls responded with a 9-2 run to slice the deficit to a single possession, 17-14. Skye Owen flushed a driving lay-up to hold a five-point edge after 10 minutes.
In the second frame, the Cowgirls climbed with two burying a triple to start the quarter. The Red Storm rattled off a 6-0 run closed out by a sweeping lay-up from Moore to bring the lead to eight. Wyatt drilled a contested long two-point jumper, 27-18. Owen swiped a steal and threw a dart to a streaking Lavelle for the fastbreak lay-up. The senior forward finished the first half with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting tallying a bucket to extend the lead to its largest of the night, 34-23, with 1:40 left in the half. The Red Storm carried a double-digit advantage, 35-25, into the break. St. John's held Oklahoma State without a field goal for the final 9:36 of the second stanza.
In the second half, the Cowgirls battled back into the contest opening the quarter a 9-2 scoring spurt to make it a one possession game. Shaulana Wagner flushed a runner to bring the run to a halt. Oklahoma State knotted the score after an and one from Micah Gray to tie the score, 39-39, with 3:20 to play in the stanza. After Oklahoma State took its first lead since the first two minutes of the game, Moore and Donald tallied back-to-back buckets to retake control. The Johnnies and Cowgirls went into the final frame tied, 47-47.
Heading into a highly contested fourth quarter, Wyatt opened up the frame with a second chance bucket off an offensive rebound. Janeya Grant came up clutch with a big time and one and a triple to extend the lead to seven, 58-51, with 5:43 remaining. Beautiful Waheed took off for a crucial old-fashioned three-point play that sent the crowd into a roar and expanded the lead to nine, 61-52. In the final minutes, Oklahoma State climbed back into the game creeping within five in the final minute. St. John's made crucial stops and took care of business at the charity stripe to hold on for a victory.
St. John's will close the homestand on Monday night when it meets CCSU at 6 p.m. before heading to the Cayman Islands Classic on Nov. 28-29 to face Georgia Tech and Memphis.
