St. John’s Sinks Le Moyne to Open 2025-26 Campaign, 68-53

Red Storm bench totaled 40 points in the winning effort at Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2025) – The St. John's women's basketball program (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) recorded a 68-53 victory over Le Moyne (0-1, 0-0 NEC) on Monday afternoon to begin the 2025-26 campaign at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm engineered a dominant 20-0 scoring run and held their opponents with a single-point for over eight minutes of game action to run away with their ninth consecutive victory in season openers.
Brooke Moore had a career day in her first-ever appearance with St. John's The junior set new personal bests in points (15), rebounds (8) and blocks (4).
In her Red Storm debut, Daniela Abies recorded a double-double finishing the contest with 10 points and 15 rebounds. The double-double marked her first since she broke the American Athletic Conference Tournament record in rebounding totaling 22 points and 22 boards in a win over Florida Atlantic on March 9, 2024 while at Wichita State. The redshirt junior became the first St. John's player to recorded 15 caroms or more since Jillian Archer grabbed 17 in a win over Georgetown on New Year's Eve in 2022.
Janeya Grant splashed three first half triples to close the contest with nine points, tying a career-high with three 3-pointers made. Senior Jailah Donald chipped in nine points and Shaulana Wagner led the team with seven assists.
The victory marked the 240th in the career of Head Coach Joe Tartamella, who moved to 13-1 all-time in season and home openers. The Red Storm benefited from 40 points off the bench and 28 off Le Moyne's 20 turnovers.
Moore recorded the first bucket of the season finishing an and one as the visitors carried an early 7-3 advantage. The Red Storm responded surging on an 8-0 run closed by a Janeya Grant triple. Donald cashed in a mid-range jumper to bring the scoreline to 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second stanza, St. John's blew the game open orchestrating a 20-0 dominant scoring run holding the Dolphins scoreless for the opening 8:03 of the quarter. Skye Owen opened the flood gates in the second quarter with a mid-range jumper. As the lead continued to expand in the middle of the frame, the Johnnies rattled off five consecutive makes from the field closing with a triple from Grant. The sophomore matched her career-best with her third make from beyond-the-arc to finish out 20 straight points for St. John's. The defense shut out Le Moyne from field goal range for 8:40 of game time for the Dolphins, missing eight straight field goals and sevem turnovers during that span.
The Red Storm went into the locker room with a 38-20 advantage scoring 20 points off 13 Dolphins' turnovers.
In the third quarter, a made jumper by Donald brought the Johnnies to their largest lead of the latter stanza, 43-22, with 7:51 remaining in the frame. Later in the quarter, a Dolphins triple brought their deficit to 12, 46-34, with 2:20 left to play. The Johnnies ended the frame with a 6-0 spurt capped off by a mid-range make from Kylie Lavelle to carry a 17-point advantage into the final 10 minutes, 53-36.
In the fourth quarter,Le Moyne continued to chip into the Red Storm lead bringing it down to as few as 11, 62-51, with 3:35 left on the clock. Donald found Beautiful Waheed for a crucial knock down from long-range to preserve a home victory for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday night to take on the defending Ivy League Champions Harvard on Nov, 7 at 8 p.m. inside Lavietes Pavilion on ESPN+.
