St. John’s Blows Past Stony Brook, 73-42

The Red Storm pick up 30-point road victory over the Seawolves
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The St. John's Women's Basketball team (9-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) blew past Stony Brook (3-8, 0-0 CAA), 73-42, on Wednesday night on Long Island to move to prolong a seven-game non-conference winning streak.
For the fifth time in the last eight contests, the Red Storm shot 50 percent or better from the floor cashing in on 28-of-56 of its field goal attempts. The Johnnies shot 92.9 percent (13-14) from the free throw line, the program's highest mark with 10 or more attempts from the charity stripe since the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal against Creighton on March 7, 2020, when they also shot 92.9 percent from the line.
Defensively, St. John's limited Stony Brook to three single-digit scoring quarters and 18.8 percent shooting from beyond-the-arc. The Red Storm forced the Seawolves into 22 turnovers converting them into 28 points at Stony Brook Arena
The duo of Sa'Mya Wyatt and Shaulana Wagner were the main scoring catalyst for St. John's in its largest margin of victory this season. For the fifth consecutive game, Wyatt scored in double-figures and paced the Johnnies for the fourth time this season finishing with a team-high 13 points and eight rebounds. Wagner chipped in 12 points and dished out three helpers to aid in the victory. Beautiful Waheed was the third Johnnie to tally double-digits adding 10 points. Jailah Donald recorded eight points and ended the night with a plus-28.
On the opposing side, Diaka Berete led Stony Brook with 17 points, eight boards and four steals.
St. John's opened up the game on a 10-2 run through the first six minutes of action. Brooke Moore added a pair of buckets during the game-opening scoring spurt. The Seawolves made up some ground to close out the quarter but the Johnnies held a 15-9 edge at the conclusion of the first quarter.
In the second stanza, the Red Storm rattled off an 8-0 run to start the frame paced by Wagner to stretch the advantage to 14, 23-9. The Seawolves responded with an 11-2 stretch to chop the deficit to as few as five, 25-20, with four minutes remaining in the half. The Red Storm struck back as an and one from Wagner brought the lead back to double-figures, 20-30. In the final moments of the second half, Donald knocked down a 3-pointer off the assist from Wyatt to propel St. John's to a 35-24 advantage heading into the locker room, 35-24.
In the latter half, the Red Storm kept its foot on the gas, as Wyatt registered a 7-0 solo run to expand the lead to 18, 42-24. The Johnnies held the home side scoreless for the opening 4:12 of the frame before the Seawolves tallied a 9-2 run to creep within 11, 44-33. The Johnnies finished the quarter with seven unanswered points to bring a 51-33 into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, St. John's continued to expand its advantage dominating the final frame for the second consecutive game. Waheed took advantage of a Stony Brook turnover to balloon the lead to 25, 63-38, with 5:54 to play. Kyla Hayes and Julie Bahati recorded baskets in the final minutes to bring the St. John's lead to over the 30-point mark, its largest of the night to cruise to a road victory.
St. John's will return to Queens for its final non-conference home game when it meets another Long Island foe in Hofstra on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
