St. John’s to Host Hofstra on Saturday Afternoon

Red Storm is coming off a 31-point victory over Stony Brook on Wednesday
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's Women's Basketball program (9-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) will return to Carnesecca Arena to host its second straight Long Island opponent in Hofstra (2-6, 0-0 CAA) for the final non-conference home game of the year on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Saturday's midday matchup will be streamed on ESPN+ with Johnny Gadamowitz and Lauren DeFalco on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's will host a Youth Day, as kids of all ages are encouraged to wear a jersey to the game to receive a discounted ticket. After the game, there will be a postgame lay-up session with the entire team inside Carnesecca Arena. In its last contest, the Red Storm cruised past Stony Brook, 73-42, on the road Wednesday night fir its largest margin of victory this season. The Johnnies are riding a seven-game non-conference win streak and have eight of their last nine contests heading into the weekend.
The Johnnies shot 50 percent or better from the floor for the fifth time out of the last eight contests. St. John's shot 92.9 percent (13-14) from the foul line, the highest free throw percentage, with over 10 attempts, since March 7, 2020 in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal against Creighton.
St. John's locked down Stony Brook's offensive efforts, limiting the Seawolves to three single-digit scoring periods and an 18.8 percent shooting from 3-point range. The Red Storm forced 22 Stony Brook turnovers and converted the takeaways into 28 points.
The duo of Sa'Mya Wyatt and Shaulana Wagner were the main offensive forces for St. John's in its largest margin of victory this season. For the fifth consecutive game, Wyatt scored in double-figures and paced the Johnnies for the fourth time this season finishing with a team-high 13 points and eight rebounds. Wagner chipped in 12 points and dished out three helpers to aid in the victory. Beautiful Waheed was the third Johnnie to tally double digits, for the fourth time this year, adding 10 points. The former top-rated junior college recruit is shooting 46.4 percent from 3-point range.
St. John's and Hofstra have only met five times in the past 24 years, dating back to Nov 23, 2001. The Red Storm hold a 3-2 series record over the Pride, having won the last two meetings in history. The Johnnies most recently defeated Hofstra, 62-38, away on Dec. 11, 2024. Kylie Lavelle added 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and a season-high eight rebounds in the victory on Long Island.
Hofstra picked up its second win of the season with an 80-44 win over Division III opponent, Marywood, on Dec. 9. The Pride held the Pacers to five percent (1-20) from three-point range and 30.8 percent (8-26) from the floor. The Pride set season bests recording eight team blocks, the most in a single-game since Mar. 3, 2018 and outrebounded Marywood 51-33, grabbing 50 or more boards for the first time this season.
Alarice Gooden and Sandra Magolico have both emerged as some of the Pride's leading producers. Graduate forward, Magolico, puts up 10.5 points, 5.0 boards and 1.3 steals per game. Gooden, a senior is averaging 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 helpers per contest.
Hofstra ranks fourth in the CAA in free throw percentage (69.4) and have limited opponents to 30.8 percent from three-point range to rank sixth in the league.
Following Saturday's contest, St. John's will close out its non-conference schedule at New Haven on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip off. The Red Storm hold an 8-1 record against out-of-league opponents this season.
