Kylie Lavelle became the first Red Storm player since 2020 to make 10 consecutive free throws
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's Women's Basketball team edged out Hofstra, 63-60, in the team's non-conference home finale on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
Senior forward Kylie Lavelle scored a game-high 17 points to lead three Johnnies in double figures against the Pride (2-6, 0-0 CAA). She finished 11-of-12 at the free throw line and made 10 in a row to start the game. She became the first St. John's player to make 10 straight from the charity stripe since Alissa Alston on Feb. 28, 2020, in an overtime victory over Butler. As a team, the Johnnies made 21 of its 24 attempts (87.5%) from the line, finishing north of 87% for the second straight game.
Senior Brooke Moore scored 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting while sophomore Janeya Grant posted 12 points on 4-of-8 from the field.
St. John's (10-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) pulled ahead by as many as 19 in the first half and led by 13 after three quarters. Hofstra started the final stanza on a 13-1 run to pull within one near the midway mark of the period. The Red Storm never allowed the Pride to retake the lead, holding off the Hofstra push and picking up its third straight victory.
Lavelle willed the Red Storm in the early going, accounting for eight of the Johnnies' 18 first-quarter points. After converting two early free-throw attempts, Lavelle drilled two top-of-the-key triples on back-to-back possessions. Behind Lavelle's spurt, St. John's was able to overcome Hofstra graduate forward Sandra Magolico's quick six points, carrying a nine-point lead, 18-9, into the second quarter.
The Johnnies' stifling defense continued into the second, allowing just 10 points while holding the Pride to 5-of-18 shooting from the floor. St. John's continued to build its lead, pulling ahead by as many as 19 before taking a 34-19 edge into the locker room.
Anchored by a perfect 11-for-11 showing from the charity stripe, the Red Storm led by double digits for the entirety of the third quarter. Lavelle sank all eight of her free throw attempts in the penultimate period.
In the fourth quarter, the Red Storm saw its 13-point cushion quickly shrink as Hofstra opened the stanza with a 13-1 run to cut its deficit to one, 52-51, at the 5:11 mark. Redshirt junior forward Daniela Abies halted the surge with a timely triple late in the shot clock, Hofstra battled back to knot the score at 55 on a pair of Alarice Gooden free throws with just under three minutes remaining. Moore drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing offensive possession to put the Red Storm back ahead by three. After a pair of Hofstra free throws pulled the Pride back within one, Grant nailed a triple of her own with 24 seconds ago to put the Red Storm ahead by four. Hofstra had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but the shot fell short and St. John's held on for the win.
St. John's will close out the non-conference slate with a road game at New Haven on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Hazell Center.
