Joe Tartamella Earns 250th Career Victory; St. John’s Downs New Haven, 67-47

Tartamella records 250th career win becoming the third active BIG EAST Coach to reach the milestone at the same institution
NEW HAVEN, Conn.– Head Coach Joe Tartamella added another career milestone to his resume, earning his 250th career victory on Wednesday night as St. John's downed New Haven, 67-47, at the Hazell Center.
The Red Storm (11-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) won its ninth-straight against non-conference opponents in New Haven to close out the out-of-league slate with a 10-1 record. Over the last four seasons, the Johnnies have posted a 35-8 (.814) mark in non-conference regular season games and notched a 20-2 (.909) record over the last two campaigns.
Tartamella becomes the third active BIG EAST Women's Basketball Coach to tally 250 or more career victories at the same school joining UConn's Geno Auriemma and Creighton's Jim Flanery. The program's all-time winningest coach eclipsed the 250-win threshold in his 425th career game in his 14th season at the helm. During his time leading the program, Tartamella has guided the Johnnies to 10 winning seasons, four NCAA Tournament berths, eight postseason appearances and the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament Championship.
St. John's shot 49.1% percent (28-57) from the floor and won the battle on the boards, 37-30. Junior Brooke Moore led the team, just shy of a double-double adding 23 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. The junior shot 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the floor during the victory.
Jailah Donald logged a season-high 12 points off the bench, shooting 4-for-6 from the floor in 25 minutes of action.
New Haven's Addisen Sulikowski led the Chargers with 14 points on Wednesday night.
New Haven (2-8, 0-0 NEC) opened the contest with a 6-2 run before St. John's regained control, tying the game at six at 4:15. Back-to-back triples from Moore and sophomore Janeya Grant highlighted a 10-point scoring effort to pull ahead 16-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Red Storm continued to extend its lead in the second frame with Moore leading the charge, dropping seven points during the quarter. The Johnnies outscored the Chargers, 21-8, in the second quarter, capped off by a buzzer-beater from Sa'Mya Wyatt to end the first half with a 37-14 cushion. St. John's held New Haven to 26.9 percent shooting during the opening 20 minutes.
During the third quarter, the Chargers chopped into the lead but were fended off as the Red Storm carried a 48-29 advantage into the final frame.
In the final frame, St. John's maintained its double-digit advantage as Moore and Donald continued to lead the charge offensively, combining for 12 fourth quarter points. Julie Bahati and Kyla Hayes tallied baskets during the final minutes, as the Red Storm cruised to a 20-point fourth quarter, 67-47.
St. John's will jump back into BIG EAST play with a road game at Villanova on Monday at 12 p.m. at Finneran Pavilion.
