St. John’s to Cap Off Non-Conference Play at New Haven

Red Storm and Chargers will meet for the first time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball program will close out the non-conference slate at New Haven on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Wednesday's matchup will be streamed on NEC FrontRow with Gary Erdelyi and Kristin Parisi on the call from New Haven.
The Red Storm (10-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) edged out Hofstra, 63-60, in the team's non-conference home finale on Saturday afternoon. The Johnnies carry an eight-game non-conference win streak into the final non-league matchup of the year.
St. John's led by 13-point after three quarters and led by as many as 19 during the game before Hofstra staged a dramatic comeback effort in the final period.
The Pride tied the game at 55 with 2:48 to go but was halted by a pair of clutch 3-pointers from Daniela Abies and Janeya Grant in the closing minutes to help the Johnnies hold off Hofstra.
The Johnnies shot 21-24 (87.5%) from the free throw line, finishing north of 87% for the second straight game.
Senior forward Kylie Lavelle led the Johnnies in scoring for the first time this season, finishing with a game-high of 17 points. She finished 11-of-12 at the free throw line and made 10 in a row to start the game. She became the first St. John's player to make 10 straight from the charity stripe since Alissa Alston on Feb. 28, 2020, in an overtime victory over Butler.
Senior Brooke Moore scored 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting while Grant made four of her eight field goal attempts to finish with 12 points. On the season, Moore is averaging a team high 14.6 points per game on 58.6% shooting including a 47.6% clip from beyond the arc.
St. John's and New Haven (2-7, 0-0 NEC) will meet for the first time on Wednesday. The Chargers recently made the jump to Division I, joining the NEC for the 2025-26 season.
New Haven returns to play after a week reprieve. The Chargers last hosted Yale on Dec. 8, when they fell, 63-49, at The Hazell Center. Yale shot 44.8% from the floor while the Chargers were held to 28.3% shooting.
Two New Haven players, Aniya McDonald-Perry and Schuyler Coles, reached double-digit figures during the contest. McDonald-Perry recorded her third career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Lindsay Hogan is New Haven's current leading scorer, averaging 13.3 points while chipping in 6.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. McDonald-Perry leads the Chargers down low, averaging 8.2 boards, 2.7 assists, 3.1 steals and 0.8 blocks per outing.
Following Wednesday's contest, St. John's will jump back into conference play, traveling to Villanova on Monday, Dec. 22 for a 12 p.m. tip off. The Red Storm holds a 1-1 record against BIG EAST opponents this year.
