St. John’s Travels to Stony Brook for Midweek Matchup

Red Storm are coming off 16-point second half comeback victory over Providence, 62-55
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Women's Basketball program (8-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) travel to Stony Brook (3-7, 0-0 CAA) for a Wednesday night game at 7 p.m. on Long Island.

The Red Storm returned to their home court on Sunday spurring, a 16-point second half comeback to earn a victory over BIG EAST opponent Providence, 62-55.
The Johnnies trailed by as many as 16 points midway through the third quarter before outscoring the Friars 36-13 over the final 15:57 of game time. In the fourth quarter, the Red Storm outscored Providence, 23-9, on 72.7 percent shooting from field goal range.
The resurgence was led by Brooke Moore, who netted 14 of her 16 points in the second half and shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The junior was recognized
by the conference for the second straight week earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
Shaulana Wagner and Sa'Mya Wyatt also played a major role in the Johnnies first BIG EAST win of the year. Both found their way into the double-digit scoring column but the end of the contest with Wagner dropping 12 points and Wyatt adding 13. Wagner, grabbed eight rebounds and logged five assists to add to her performance.
Wyatt and Moore sit atop the conference and rank top-25 nationally in field goal percentage. Wyatt is currently hitting 61.8 percent from the field, leading the league and ranked 11th in the NCAA Division I. Moore is right behind her, converting 60.5 percent of her attempts for second in the conference and 22nd in the country. Wagner ranks top-20 in NCAA Division I and paces the BIG EAST, dishing out 6.0 assists per outing.
Over the last three weeks, the Red Storm are number one in all of Division I women's basketball with a 62.6 two-point field goal percentage. The Johnnies lead the league in blocks averaging 5.0 per game.
St. John's and Stony Brook will meet for the 10th time on Wednesday afternoon with the series dating back to Nov. 23, 1999. The Red Storm have won seven of the nine previous meetings. Last season, the Johnnies locked down the Seawolves, 58-34, on Nov. 24, 2024 inside Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies held Stony Brook to just 34 points, including 17 over the final three quarters. The impressive defensive effort marked the lowest opponent point total since Dec. 17, 2016.
Joy McCorvey, a former four-year St. John's captain, heads the Seawolves in her second season at the helm. McCorvey played in Queens from 2007-10, where she was a top-30 candidate for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and a member of the St. John's University President's Society. She began her coaching career at St. John's and joined then Associate Head Coach Joe Tartamella on the Red Storm staff in 2011-12, when the Johnnies advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Stony Brook enters the contest with a 3-7 overall record and have dropped six of their last seven contests. In their last outing, the Seawolves fell at Harvard, 67-33, on Friday afternoon inside Lavietes Pavilion.
Stony Brook's Janay Brantely leads the team averaging 10.9 points per game, shooting 34.5 percent from the field and 72.0 percent from the free throw line. Caitlin Frost chipped in nine points and one assist against the Crimson and led the squad with seven boards, averaging 4.9 per game to rank second in the CAA in rebounding.
Sandra Frau-Garcia ranks second in the CAA adding 4.5 assists per game and third in the league logging 2.3 steals per contest.
Defensively, the Seawolves have forced opponents in 18.8 turnovers per game, which ranks fourth in the league. Stony Brook recorded 8.9 steals per game, which sits fifth in the league.
Following Sunday's contest, St. John's will return home for another non-conference contest against Hofstra for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
