Will Cowan and Jayder Raifstanger logged a team-high two hits
Brady Clark made his first career appearance in the sixth inning of Sunday's contest, punching out the side and throwing 12 strikes on 18 pitches. Clark, along with Jacob Ruiz, Chad Falcon and Sam Mettert combined for 4.1 scoreless innings of relief in Lynchburg, Va.
Jared Beebe and Shaun McMillan each tallied an RBI, while Will Cowan and Jayder Raifstanger recorded a team-high two hits in the contest. One of Raifstanger's knocks was the second triple of his career.
Luke Orbon and Anthony Brienza each went 1-for-2 at the plate in Lynchburg, Va., on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Storm earned the first two base runners of the game as Jackson Tucker worked a six-pitch walk in the contest's first at-bat ahead of a four-pitch free pass for Beebe. Liberty starter Josh Swink worked himself out of trouble, posting a flyout and a groundout to strand two Johnnies on base in the first inning.
The Flames posted the first four runs of the game in the bottom of the opening frame. Liberty's Nick Barone blooped an RBI-single into shallow center that plated the first score of the game followed by another RBI-one bagger that hit the right field wall. A wild pitch scored another two, giving the Flames a 4-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Red Storm threatened in the away half of the second, juicing the bases from a Cristian Bernardini walk and consecutive base hits off the bats of Orbon and Brienza. Swink generated a crucial double play, getting himself out of the jam to end the side.
Liberty extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom half of the second, after Jaxson Sorenson hit a three-run home run to right center field.
St. John's worked runners onto first and second base for the third consecutive frame, earning back-to-back Raifstanger and Beebe free bases. The strong winds did the Red Storm no favors, keeping two-straight fly balls in play to flip the third inning over to the home half.
Liberty tacked on another three runs in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of singles, growing its advantage to 10-0.
Falcon, Ruiz and Clark came to the mound in relief, exchanging scoreless innings with the Flames through the sixth frame.
The Red Storm picked up its first two runs of the game in the top of the seventh. Will Cowan started the rally, lining his first collegiate hit into center field, before Tucker and Raifstanger mashed their first base knocks of the game, loading the bases. Beebe smacked a sacrifice fly into right field, bringing Jace Jeremiah home, followed by a McMillan RBI-single that scored Tucker.
Mettert picked up where his fellow Red Storm relief pitchers left off, producing a 1-2-3 inning and retiring the 11th straight Flame to close put the bottom of the seventh.
Cowan posted his second hit of the day on a bouncing ball down the middle with two outs in the eighth, but he was thrown out trying to steal second, ending the fame.
Liberty recorded another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and never looked back, taking the season-opening series finale, 11-2.
The Red Storm will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., next weekend for a three-game set against No. 14 Wake Forest at David F. Couch Ballpark from Feb. 21-23.
