Evan Chaffee struck out six in his second appearance of the season
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The St. John's baseball team (0-4) dropped its series opener against No. 13 Wake Forest (5-1), 7-0, on Friday evening at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Evan Chaffee produced a gutsy outing in North Carolina, striking out six while allowing three runs on two hits across four innings of work. Dylan Johnson and Evan Hoeckele both rang up a pair of punchouts in relief on Friday.
Jackson Tucker and Jared Beebe each tallied two base hits apiece against the Demon Deacons. Tucker also worked a walk and stole a bag in the eighth inning. Jon LeGrande reached safely twice on a walk and a hit-by-pitch with a stolen base in the contest.
Jayder Raifstanger and Adam Agresti each logged a hit in the first game of the Red Storm's weekend series.
After a scoreless top of the first inning, Chaffee kicked off his day with an eight-pitch strikeout before allowing runners on first and second off a single and a walk. The lefty worked himself out of a two-out bases-loaded jam with his third punchout of the frame.
The Red Storm picked up its first two base runners of the game in the top of the third. LeGrande worked a walk and stole second base before moving to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Tucker earned himself a free pass but Wake Forest starter Logan Lunceford got out of trouble with his seventh strikeout of the day, flipping the side.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Demon Deacons posted the first runs of the game with a grand slam off the bat of Matt Scannell to go in front, 4-0, in the home half of the fifth.
St. John's threatened in the top of the sixth frame, as Tucker singled up the middle ahead of a Beebe base knock that was smacked through the right side, putting runners on first and second. Will Ray entered in relief for Wake Forest, finding two consecutive outs to get Wake Forest out of the frame.
The Red Storm earned two runners on base again in the away half of the seventh. Agresti fought off an 0-2 count to lace a base hit into left field which was followed by LeGrande getting punked with two outs. The Demon Deacons were able to strand the two Johnnies on base, neutralizing the threat with a strikeout and retiring the side.
Wake Forest tacked on another three insurance runs, following a homer in the seventh and a two-run shot in the eighth inning that increased its advantage to 7-0.
The Johnnies generated a pair of base runners in the top of the eighth and ninth frames, but the Demon Deacons were able to keep the Red Storm at bay, claiming the opening game of the three-game series, 7-0.
The Red Storm will continue its weekend set with No. 13 Wake Forest on Saturday. First pitch from David F. Couch Ballpark is slated for 4 p.m. ET.
