St. John’s Shutout By No. 13 Wake Forest, 11-0

Jared Beebe and Jon LeGrande each notched a hit for the Red Storm
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The St. John's baseball team (0-5) was shutout by No. 13 Wake Forest (6-1), 11-0, on Saturday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Jared Beebe and Jon LeGrande each tallied a hit for the Red Storm in game two of its weekend series against the Demon Deacons. LeGrande also worked a walk and stole a base on Saturday.
Jayder Raifstanger extended his on-base streak to five games after logging a walk in the contest. The third baseman has reached base safely in every game so far this season for the Johnnies.
Tyler Longoria made his collegiate debut in the sixth frame of Saturday's contest and threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Red Storm.
Wake Forest struck first with a Jack Winnay long ball to left field in the second frame. Red Storm starting pitcher David Rodriguez got back in his groove, producing three consecutive outs to end the inning without any more damage done.
The Demon Deacons tacked on five runs in the home half of the third inning. A two-out Ethan Conrad base hit brought two runners home just before Winnay and Kade Lewis launched back-to-back homers, giving the home team a 6-0 advantage.
Wake Forest threatened again in the bottom of the fourth with a runner in scoring position, but Rodriguez was able to engineer a 6-4-3 double play to flip the side.
The Johnnies were able to generate base runners during the top of the fifth frame. Both Luke Orbon and Anthony Brienza earned free passes to put runners on first and second. Jackson Tucker was able to reach on a fielder's choice, moving Orbon to third but Matthew Dallas was able to toss a groundout, retiring the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Demon Deacons added another score from a soft infield single, increasing its lead to 7-0. AJ Lausten, who entered in relief for Rodriguez at the start of the inning, cleaned up a runners-in-scoring position situation with consecutive outs for the Red Storm.
Tucker made a leaping catch over the dead center field wall, robbing the Demon Deacons of a home run that helped St. John's get out of the sixth inning unscathed.
Following a scoreless seventh frame, Wake Forest registered four more runs from a groundout that pushed a runner home and a pair of doubles, pushing its lead to 11-0 at the end of the eighth.
LeGrande singled into left field during the top of the final inning, but the Demon Deacons found the final three outs of the contest to win the game.
The Red Storm will wrap up its three-game series against No. 13 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Winston-Salem, N.C., is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
