St. John’s Drops Overtime Nail-Biter at DePaul, 65-64

Ber’Nyah Mayo exploded for season-high 27 points in Chicago
CHICAGO– The St. John's women's basketball team (15-14, 5-13 BIG EAST) dropped a heartbreaker in its regular season finale at DePaul (13-18, 8-10 BIG EAST) in overtime on Sunday afternoon, 65-64.
Ber'Nyah Mayo forced the overtime period with a three-point play with nine seconds to play to tie the score at the end of regulation. In the extra period, Lashae Dwyer put the Johnnies up one late before the Blue Demons hit the game-winning free throw with 4.4 left on the clock to secure a victory at Wintrust Arena. A back-and-forth affair featured 15 ties and 11 lead changes.
The Red Storm finished the regular season with a 15-14 record and earn the No. 8 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Johnnies will take on ninth-seeded Butler on Friday at 11 a.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena in the opening round.
Mayo finished with a season-high 27 points her highest point total since she scored a career-high 29 against Fordham on Feb. 8, 2023. The graduate student tallied the highest scoring total by a Red Storm player this season and shot 8-for-17 (47.1%) and 9-for-12 (75.0%) from the charity stripe. Phoenix Gedeon tallied a near double-double closing the contest with 11 points and nine rebounds in Chicago.
Sophomore Julie Bahati posted career-high's with 10 rebounds, three steals in 22 minutes of action. Dwyer chipped in nine points and three swipes.
The Johnnies forced the Blue Demons into 23 turnovers and logged 12 steals. The Red Storm outpaced DePaul in offensive rebounding, 16-7.
The Red Storm filled it up early getting off to a hot start in the Windy City. Kylie Lavelle, Mayo and Dwyer cashed from beyond-the-arc. Dwyer swiped a steal and finished the fastbreak lay-in before her triple completed the 8-0 scoring spurt to hop out to an 11-2 advantage in the opening 4:47. The Blue Demons clawed right back in it ending the opening frame on a 8-2 spurt as the Red Storm held a 13-10 edge through the first 10 minutes.
In the second stanza, the Red Storm struggled to score before a high-arching lay-up from Gedeon dropped through to end the drought. Gedeon stayed hot with an and one After multiple turnovers that traded possession back and forth in the final seconds, Owen found Gedeon for a 3-point attempt as the buzzer sounded that the post player swished to make it a three-point game, 27-24, heading into the locker room.
In the third frame, Mayo flushed a triple to quickly knot the score at 27. The teams kept pace with one another throughout the frame as neither team led by more than a four-point margin. The Johnnies shot 7-of-8 from the free throw line during the stanza and DePaul held a 42-40 advantage after 30 minutes.
Jailah Donald knocked down a corner triple off a swing pass from Mayo to regain the advantage at the 8:15 mark, 45-42. Later in the fourth, the Blue Demons stretched their advantage to as many as five, 54-49, Mayo finished through contact to end a lengthy scoring drought and bring it back to a two-point game, 54-52, with 0:45 left to play in regulation. DePaul's Meg Newman split from the line as the Red Storm had a chance to tie with 0:16 to play. Mayo was the hero once again driving down the right side of the lane getting the lay-up to go while absorbing the foul. The team captain sunk the free throw to knot the score at 57. The Blue Demons missed their attempt at the game-winner and Dwyer threw up a heave as time expired as the two sides were headed to overtime for the second straight year in Chicago.
