QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team swept Morgan State, 4-0, on Sunday night, wrapping up an undefeated four-match homestand to open the 2025 campaign. With Sunday's win over the Bears at Cunningham Park, the Johnnies have won their first four matches for the first time since 2021.
The Red Storm blitzed through doubles play, picking up two convincing wins to earn the team point before dominating three singles matches to finish off the victory in the first-ever matchup between the two schools.
Alicia Gomez and Victoria Papadopoulou opened partner play with their team-leading third doubles triumph of the season, taking down Hannah Smith and Aleksandra Evdokimov, 6-1, on the No. 1 court. Giulia Bizzari and Alexandra Nielsen paired up for the first time in 2025, besting Tyler Williams and Jula Jeffery, 6-2, on the No. 3 court to clinch the doubles point for the Johnnies.
In singles action, Gomez took down Marta Serra Carles in straight sets on the No. 4 court, 6-0, 6-2, for her second win of the day. The senior is a perfect 4-0 in solo play this season. Up 2-0 in the match, Sandra Dzhambazov gave the home side a commanding 3-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-0 performance at No. 5 singles Roua Limem.
Nielsen's second victory of the match, a dominating 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 2 singles over Lauryn Hall, wrapped up the third straight sweep for the Red Storm.
Through four matches this season, St. John's is 13-0 as a team in singles play and has only dropped three doubles contests.
Up next, the Johnnies will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to East Brunswick, N.J., on Feb. 7 to face Rutgers. First serve from the East Brunswick Tennis Club is set for Noon.
