St. John’s to Face Rutgers and Illinois State This Weekend

The Johnnies will meet the Scarlet Knights on Friday before hosting the Red Birds on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will hit the road for the first time in 2025 to face Rutgers on Friday in East Brunswick, N.J., before returning home on Saturday to square off with Illinois State. First serve from the East Brunswick Tennis Club is set for noon, while Saturday's match will start at 7:15 at the USTA National Tennis Center.

The Johnnies swept Marist and Morgan State last week to improve to 4-0 this season, its best start since 2021. St. John's has yet to drop a singles contest, winning all 13 it has played through four contests. Alicia Gomez leads the Johnnies with a 4-0 solo record, while Alexandra Nielsen, Nicoline Sartz-Lunde, Sandra Dzhambazov and Giulia Bizzari have each picked up a pair of victories.
In doubles action, Bizzari is a perfect 3-0, with two of the wins coming alongside Charlotta Buss, and one with Nielsen. Gomez and Victoria Papadopoulou are 3-1 in partner play as a pair.
Rutgers enters Friday's contests on a three-match winning streak and is 3-1 overall this season. Last time out, the Scarlet Knights scraped out a 4-3 triumph on the road against Delaware. Karina Jumazhanova and Mai Nguyen lead Rutgers with three singles wins each. Zuzanna Frankowska and Zeynep Ilker are a perfect 3-0 in partner play, as are Naomi Karku and Nguyen.
The Scarlet Knights picked up a 4-0 win over the Johnnies last season in New Jersey. St. John's trails in the all-time series between the two programs, 9-3.
Illinois State is also on a three-match winning streak, bringing its season record to 3-2. Last Saturday, the Red Birds took down Marquette on the road, 5-2. Before facing the Johnnies on Saturday, Illinois State will square off with Fordham on Friday morning in the Bronx.
This will be the first-ever matchup between the Red Storm and the Red Birds.
Following this weekend's pair of contests, the Johnnies will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 14, to take on FDU at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is set for 12:15 p.m.
